After our recent family visit in South Africa it was time to visit Highland Lodge, close to Dordrecht. Myself, Francois and Kobie made up the group.

The comfortable accomodation was sorted and off we went to explore the dams. The shallows of the dams are heavely overgrown with weed, we were however, warned beforehand by the owners. Although it makes fishing difficult from the bank it provide the trout with plenty to eat. Dont be clever like us, pack a float tube.

We fished with 6 weight rods, floating lines, 9ft 1X leaders with a 2-3ft 2X tippet.

Flies that worked best were: Size 14 bead head buggers in olive or black, GRHE and a small weighted deerhair nymph.

We caught plenty, but did not succeed in hooking and landing a bus. Included some pics to proof that winter fishing can be cold but fun.

After two days of non stop fishing we left for Clarence to sample Free-State fishing.

All of this for three people.

Have you tried neoprene gloves, what are they like? Other tips that could help in keeping warm, will be appreciated.

Problem is with neoprene, no sensation with the line. I would cut the two forfinger tips off half way but still not ideal. they will save your fingers from freezing though....haha. I cant fish with gloves but if in those conditions, I have wrist warmers with heat packs, that warm the blood going to your hand and fingers. That works for me but as for the eyes freezing up, well thats another story....:fswim

A little trick I found is to use a pair of sugical gloves on those icey days. You wont believe how warm  they keep your hands as they stop them from getting wet. Because they are so thin you still get the feeling you need in order to fish AND you can even figure 8 in them!

A tip is to get them quite tight - almost a size too small so that there is no loose latex getting in the way.

ek was n maand terug daar gewees! Visvang in daai sperwing dam is insane gewees. Mar ja, jy het n float tube nodig om agter die weed beds te werk!
