my son snapped my brand new dropshot rod (snapped on the top end of the rod, just below the second eye). Please advise whether it can be fixed and at what costs.

Im no expert, but to answer the question, Yes it can be fixed,
BUT,
The action of the rod will be severely altered, and if fighting a decent fish or when casting, it will be prone to breaking again.

I'd say try and get a new tip.

It can be repaired with a spiggot of graphite of similar taper. A long bind and epoxy over it will prevent splitting.

Cost would be about R50-70 depending on the availability of the Carbon insert plus shipping costs

As Homie said the blank will lose it's true character as it's beefed up in a section. this increases the chances of breaking elsewhere.

I would recommend going back to your tackle dealer to see if they can supply a new tip for replacement, most can even if it takes a while

i bought me a pen sargus 4000, braided line which cost me R470 and a franlin loomis dropshot rod (platinum). I usually fish with heavy tackle and have been wanting to try out this dropshot setup for almost a year now. I guess i will have to wait a couple of more days before i get to use this set-up.

Nice setup dude!! I want to get me one of those reels soon. Im using a waft dropshot shimi slade 4000. I have done dropshot in the cape there just arent that many places we can. Done some spinning in Zandvlei though.

Hmmm they are very picky on the dropshot baits hey. Best bet would be to do the normal light tackle with REAL bait route. And flourocarbon is a must

how effective are those dropshot hooks 2/0. (ie the hook set into a small ball sinker 1ounce) with some red bait for galjoen. can i use the normal figure 8 knot (blood knot) to tie braid to a power swivel.

Hmmm I would recommend you tie some form of leader to your braid to be quite honest. If you want someone to show you how you are more than welcome to come around to me and I will show you the ropes. Just bring some mono with your florocarbon and your reel. I'll show you a simple but effective way to tie.

ive seen many fishing video the most recent one is with the alcock brothers whether they tie the braid to a power swivel and at the other end of the swivel is some leader line. I guess it just preference at the end of the day - braid to swivel to leader or braid to leader directly.
