my new D/shot setup

i have just got a Daiwa Exeler 4000 and a Exeler heavy 7ft dropshot setup( Swambo's b-day gift) and i need to know what braid would be the best to use with this rod & reel and if it's OK to use mono for backing? i will be using it this weekend off the boat at Rocky bay(mommie's b-day gift) on the reefs! the rest of the time i will be using it to get my live bait and throwing jigheads in the surf! i'm not sure on breaking strain that would be best as a all round choice( if thats possible) ! and if i can use mono backing, what make and thickness would be best?

oh! also when joining mono to braid! is the double bimini & catspaw still the way to go on a grinder?

thanx in advance!!!

kingfisher casting braid in orange 12lb 300m should fill it and then floro carbon leader, yes fireline is good but for the R300 price difference in the 300m rolls kingfisher better

Office... Fireline is hard to beat in this department. I recently bought some Berkley TRACER braid... beautiful stuff but pricey. The guys "in the know" reckon this stuff is 'revolutionary' - similar to Fireline, but perfectly round. So in my opinion, those are the 2 to go for... (top of the range). (Van the man and Long John would probably have more info on the Tracer braid's specs and why it is so good.)

Seeing as though you've got a Heavy rod, I would go as high as 20lb braid - this would increase your range on the setup - you could target some bigger nunu's with this setup, as well as bait fish.

You can use mono as backing, but usually this will be unnecessary, since a 300m spool of Fireline will fill the whole spool of an Exceler 4000.

Joining mono backing to braid, yes the knot of choice would be the Cats Paw. Joining braid to Leader... Bimini-Yucatan; Use a 4m Fluorocarbon leader/or ordinary mono leader. But definitely use Fluorocarbon on the Hook snoot.

Hope it helps.

It works very well ,I prefer to use 20 pound braid because it matches the fighting power of the combo ,you will also be amazed how far you can cast.

if you gonna be using Fireline, I would not suggest anything heavier than 14lb, that is the max really,
after that the thickness just gets too much, especially when you consider that you are using a 4000 sized reel.

The thickness of fireline is the factor most people don't look at.
The thinner your braid the longer your cast (less resistance)

I would actually recommend 10lb as an allrounder.

The reel comes with 2 spools, fill one with between 8-10lb Fireline for your dropshot and livebait catching and the other with 14-20lb Kingfisher for your boat fishing (where casting isn't so important)

that way you have heavier for the boat and lighter for the side

Leader line, off the boat go heavier, from the side go lighter, depending on what you are targetting

Thanx Reefs and Neil !

i eventualy put some XX .40 hi viz as backing and 100m odd of 10lb fireline, as that was all i could afford! works well and the feeling on the braid is magic! but i will just have to remember not to strike with my finger holding the line!!!:doh

all and all i love the setup, and the casting distance was very suprizing!!:shock:can't wait to go and try it on Richardsbay's piers!

I have a really stoopid question I need answered . Peace of Mind .

: Can a passion stick , or whatever , drp shot rod , be used to catch fish umm.. "normally ", as in 2 oz sinker and Off you go ?
It sounds really silly , but i want to actually get my Passion sticked Stretched a little this weekend , and I'll be taking Lures along , to the kraanse , but I'd also Like to use some white mussel and give that a try .
I realise due to the 2 oz Limitation , I can't REALLY chuck a pieca Lead without putting the rod in danger , but , um - will it work ?
I'm taking the shad pro 12 footer down , as this is what i actually planned to work the rocks with that . but I want to Know if I'm using a ferrari to plough the fields , so to speak , by doing this .

I use them for that purpose on a regular basis, but it's not with a 2oz sinker, normally 1 or 1.5oz
