Mussel Cracker

Good luck Roland

I always fished to light when younger and picked up a few on Red Crab but came 2nd before the fight even began.

Fished a rig as described by KT of the ledges at Witsands. I took a nice size Alikreukel, cracked the shell and threaded it onto an 8/0 on 0.90 hookline.

Cast into a rocky gully and under direction of a local pulled the line in till the sinker jammed up.

Stood the rod in the bricks with quite a tight drag, then fished for Belman. Abount 50 minutes later the rod was pulled flat and a fish screamed off.

Tug of war on o.60mm Maxima. Got the fish to my feet and it swam down and jammed it's head into the bricks. I got in and eventually had to break it's neck to get it out. It opens it's gill plates and wedges itself in. First one I landed and only one I took for the pot.

Great to eat but I have to much respect for this beautiful fish, to keep each I catch

Good luck with your quest. They are there and those things that glue themselves to the rocks where you stay are awesome baits.

I have to agree, after catching one of these majestic fish, you will feel sad once you killed it.Those i have kept allways seem to make you stare at it, and make you feel guilty, its like slaying a human after defeating him, and he stares you straight in the eye with contempt.

The only hooks in the current brands are the Denso's

I however got some samples from my one hook supplier and these are super strong but with a short shank.

I'll check with the supplier I just got my Circle samples from. I got tired of looking for shark fishing circles and got my agents to source some for me and what I got looks and feels really good.

Going to have to come visit for 2 or 3 days and try them out on those big black pylies

you cut out the fleshy part underneath, the hard chitonous plates are just a shell, you can either cut it up into pieces like a sostie on the hook or thread it whole on the hook, and lots of okes like mixing fresh red bait with it
or you crack up the shell (dont club to death) and put it on whole!!

Roland, that specific spot is not in front of the BP gerage(close), but to the left towards Kabeljous. Take the street right opposite the Vismandjie and drive to a big parking lot. Never caught a cracker in front of the BP. Fish right in front of the wooden steps.

No luck this morning. Tried oosies spot. Had a grab in for 2hrs lol. Line was in @ 4, so i got the outgoing tide. Freakin scary alone that early lol. Alas, i will give it a go again this afternoon. Going to the bank to make the holes little smaller and then look for some alikreukel and armidilo.

Did you wet the bed????????LOL. Its called "SUNRISE" not 2 hours before!! I find i get most of my fish around 9am or just after 3pm. They feed all day, dont have to fish at sunrise and sunset!!

Just remember the golden rule: "The time put in the water will result in FISH!!"If i had to work out the hours spent and the fish caught it would probably read 10 hours fishing to 1 cracker!!Some days you will get them throw for throw, other days you wait 3 hours for the take!!
