Conditons: Any, they say the wetter you get the bigger the fish!!

Tackle: Very short traces, no longer that 15cm!! 1mm min leader and a 1mm hook trace

Bait: Think what lives around or glued to the rocks!

Water: Depending on where you fishing, must be white rolling water. NB not too much surge!!

Tide: Mostly incomming after getting the bait off the rocks!!

Spot pics: Trophy should have 1 or Havoc!!

::tight: KT

Roland.

Dit reg daar by jou Roland

Roland, some people can fish years for cracker and have no luck. Lucky for me I got one on my very first cast and then another with the same bait on the next cast. Im yet to repeat such a performance but it is possible as they either there or they not. Shelled limpets beaded through the hook...vasbait.

The redcrab still is the best bait according to me.
Trace, I would use a fixed trace, short hook snoot and sinker snoot. I'd say 0.8mm hook trace and 7/0 or 8/0 hook should work and 0.8mm leader should be fine.
Have seen a few crackers landed on 0.6mm leader as well as without leader.
Cut the crab in half and feed the hook into the shell from where the legs come out of the body.
In the end, the point of the hook would in line with the exposed flesh of the crab and tie the legs with baitcotton onto the line. The bait is a bit more airodynamic this way and also, more flavor is released, in comparison to using the whole crab

Hiya Roland

I also caught one about similar size as Brett's in his post a bit bigger though. Believe it or not this is what worked.

.55 hook trace, about 30 cm, little bit of foam and a RED bead. No.7 Daichii 55 NOG AL!
5 oz bottle sinker

Chokka/sand prawn mix

Caught while scratching for a couple of Blue Fish(still havent caught one) and Kob.

Conditions(as per my fishing journal):
Moderate NW. Green water, pushing tide, and sand puffs in the water. Churning Water. Baro read 1022 that day- according to DSTV.

Caught: 5 July 2009, will be down at Cannon round about the same time this year, so hoping for another!

Caught it in a rocky bay at Cannon Rocks with two ledges running out. Didnt throw far, maybe 70m or a little further.

Hope this helps a bit, I am by no means a Katonkel Tom when it comes to Cracker, but hope I could help.

Cant wait for another in July.

Just a bit off topic. Keep a fishing journal, I have started- the day I caught my cracker. So I hope it pays dividends, I am sure it will. It also makes good reading when I am bored, and I am sure it will be a great predictor and make me a better fisherman- hopefully- watch this space, ha ha.

Also caught my PB blacktail that day- 31 cm, according to my journal.

I have loads of mustad 7/0 kendal rounds. Will they be ok? Why does the trace have to be so short? Are they bottom feeders? Does the bait need to float a bit?

When you've got your cracker out the reef walk backwards pulling it up rather than reeling it in. This keeps your rod at that nice angle, exerting full strength on the fish.

Hey roland

I actually have a very different trace which I new use.

Seen it from a friend whos dad was SA captain years ago.

Trust me, when it comes to cracker fishing that family puts anyone including KT "In die skool" :walk

Will make up the trace tonight n post a pic

The only one I managed to catch was while fishing for Galjoen in Jongensfontein. I got one of 6.4kg on white mussel and a 2/0 hook. I also want to target them this winter and I will appreciate all the info I can get. I will be using my Exage 110H and SL30 loaded with 9.1kg Ultima line.
