Is it wortwhile to try fly fishing in muddy water with about 6" visibilty. The yellows are there.

yes definately. If you can stick you hand in the water and still see it, then the fish will see a fly.
Remember that they have had millions of years to adapt to their environment - they will definitely feed in that visibility.
I once fished at eendekuil where the vis was really bad. I was fishing in Shin deep rapids, and could not see a fish in front of me and i was not getting a take.
I got down on my knees and fished from there, and suddenly started getting takes left right and centre! While i was standing the fish could see me but i could not see them. They stayed where they were but did not bite until i got down and they thought i had moved away.

Ideal is obviously "clear" but if you can see a black fly 10cm in then it should be ok. Anything less than that is a bit dodgy but may still be productive. I've caught yellows in extremely dirty water by catching freshwater shrimp and rubbing the fly in them. Shrimp have a very powerful scent and yellows can smell them from a mile away.

Could it have not been your movement, that deterred them.

Thanks guys. I will now take my fly stick with next time. I've been pap gooing at the spot and caught quite a lot of yellows on mielie pips. So they are there! Will keep you's updated.
