Hi All

Any tips on how to target kob and possibly geelbek at Mosselbay inshore?

Only bottom fishing? Type of bait?

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Well depends..... inshore where around Mosselbaai? Day or night?

First I would suggest fresh chokka and sardine... (I mean really FRESH) or get tips from the commercial boys and locals

5/0 to 9/0 hooks, 30 kg upwards trace (30cm) line tied to 3 way swivel and 12oz (or bigger depending on the current ect..) sinker trace line 15 kg (40 - 50 cm) You could even try 2 hooks for a start -  one loaded with sardine and one with chokka, PROVIDING you use a KP Reel (8" size or bigger) loaded with 30kg plus line... you might end up hooking two Daga Kabeljoue at once...LOL

Or use a 150 - 200lbs handline...

Should you have better takes on chokka (for example) then change to one hook + chokka...

Night fishing in the Bay.... you could try live bait if you got a live well - try and get some Mullets (Haarders) or Strepies buy at Harbour or use a throw net. Or can catch "Makriele"in the bay with a small rod.

Trace on normal reel ie. Penn/Daiwa/Shimano ect.... use a running sinker and perhaps plastic coated wire....loads of sharks will hassle you at night.

I use to live in Gouritzmond in the 80s and that's way we use to do it....

Hope this helps

LOL..... speaking form experience...happened to me when I was 13 or 14?? Lucky the double up was 2 x 8 - 10kg class Kob.... first thought I hooked into mother earth...But I managed, suppose because I had a KP with heavy line, caused much laughter to the other toppies and ballies on the boat...Quickly changed to a single hook and the very same day I hooked my p/b a 55 kg Kob.

Enjoy!
