All members please note:

We have already deleted about 20 of these threads depicting a dead Massive Great White Shark in Mossel Bay.

SEALINE ADMIN at the request of MCM and the SASAA took a decision a few years ago to not post pictures of dead Great Whites on the forum. Whether they have been caught or not... they fuel discussion on catching these sharks, which is a criminal offence (the latter).

Please respect this decision - it is NOT open for debate or discussion.

Pics and posts will continue to be deleted.

Ok... it seems as if many Sealiners are aggrieved by the fact that we have closed these threads...

In light of the fact that this story has NOTHING to do with angling ie: the Shark was not caught - only in SHARK NETS, and the fact that it is all over the News and Newspapers, and the fact that so many Sealiners seem to want to discuss this issue... Admin has taken the unprecedented decision to open discussion on this issue...

Just behave please guys, because so many of these GW discussions end up in tears....

We'll take it from there...

Who ever said that Admin was unapproachable?

George - Photographs of a huge Great White Shark being dissected at the Point in Mossel Bay caused a stir around the country this week, with people sending the pictures around by e-mail.

"The shark of about 4.3m, which was dissected on Friday in Mossel Bay, landed in nets of the Natal Sharks Board at the Zinkwasi beach in KwaZulu-Natal," said Dawie Zwiegelaar of the National Sea Rescue Institute's Mossel Bay office on Wednesday.

According to Geremy Cliff, head of the Natal Sharks Board, the female shark was weak but alive, when it was found. It was also marked.

"Staff from the Sharks Board tried in vain to free her, but she was clearly confused and was found dead in the nets early the next morning."

Cliff said the shark was dragged to the beach and taken to their head office in Umhlanga to be cut open as part of their research into feeding and reproduction.

At the request of British documentary film production company Windfall Films, it was decided to keep the shark until the film crew could film the dissection in Mossel Bay.

According to Dr Ryan Johnson, head of Ocean Research in Mossel Bay, Windfall Films wanted to film in the area due to the natural beauty. Windfall Films was busy with the second series in their popular programme Inside Nature's Giants.

The shark was dissected on Friday at the Point by staff from the Sharks Board.

The photographs that created such a buzz were taken at the time.

"It isn't one of our sharks, we don't have such small sharks," joked Zwiegelaar on Wednesday.

Can anybody tell me why, when an elephant of gigantic proportions strolls about Kruger-park,they have affectionate names like,ou "Flap-oor" or "Grootpoot" or 'Stomp-tand" .But the minute one of these majestic creatures of the deep appears on a photo it is called a "MONSTER". ?

Well at least its death won't be in vain.

The information they acquire from carrying out various tests and dissections on these sharks is amazing.

Has anyone seen the National Geographic program where they dissect a GW caught in the shark nets in Durban and they show why they are so powerful by analyzing the various muscles and gill plates etc.

Admin please explain to me this - pics of great whites may not be posted because they are a protected species etc etc (fair enough). So WHY are there 2 sealine catch records for Potato Bass? Last time i checked they were just as protected as the sharpnoses? Talk about double standards . . . .

Thanks admin. i am sure the responce from our members will be a positive one , we are all supporters of conservation and i believe in certain cases where fishing cannot be blamed ,often falsly, bringing these occurances to the fore might even encourage others to support the conservation of the species

Thanks for pointing that out to us Aquadementia... purely an oversight, I assure you. I will delete them as soon as I get a gap from putting out fires on Sealine and answering all my PM's. May I point out to you that there is however, no need to get all snotty and accuse us of double standards - next time you can type out the entire list with all the existing records and you can keep it up to date... then I'll sit back and criticize you for no reason... sheesss some okes, need a lesson in manners! :swear

Big Small ive seen some, you dont wanna mess with them!

We fished (longlining) of Cocos Island which is off Mexico in the Pacific, a haven for sharks, especially Hammerheads, Mako's and Longtail Threshers. Our target was only shark...any shark!!

A Tiger shark came to the surface, hooked ........his head ...2 mtrs across - length of body I cannot imagine.....!!!!

Swimming diving from the ship was forbidden.........that was our highlight of the day!! :ssswim:

Damm there's big fish in the sea   ::respekt:  them, they are more important.

Regardless of the circumstances of the G.W ,the being caught up in the shark nets and so on you gotta admit guys that even in death and strung up in the gantry its still a magnificent creature, poor joe soap in the street is so misinformed by the press /media......... my vote goes to the G.W on this one .

bugger that is huge. over 4m... got a sideways pic of it from work today. i dont know anything bout sharks let alone a GW, do they get bigger than that?

Was on honny moon in mosselbay that week, went to that pub place at the point to have a cold one, then go met by that.
So I had more than one cold one and lunch, wanted to see the film crew at work.

it was fun listning to al the people that walk into the place and there comments.

Hoping the program airs on dstv. can be interesting to watch

This thread should be removed - My opinion.
Sealine is a Fishing and Boating community - not a conservation entity.

Conservation forms an integral part of the existance and principals of Sealine, but not like this.

If anybody finds an article like this interesting, insightfull and worth attending to, then post us a link.
We can go to whoever's website, read their article and then consider it's merrits before we discuss the topic here.

By doing this we will firstly avoid photoshop pictures sent by email and 20 year old incidents that belong with the dead and buried amongst others.

By referring to a credible source of informatiom, our discussion starts with facts, not hearsay and not with unnecesary hype.

If we continue to agree to this type of thread we will sooner rather than later be seeing pictures of the 'Justified' research that Japan does by culling hundreds of Whales per annumn, as there is a loophole in the international regulation that bans the killing of whales.

The nature of this picture is not degrading to this animal.
It is not a beast or a monster.
It is dead.
Just like a dead octopuss with it's head turned inside out, a tuna fish hanging by it's tail, a billfish that isn't strung up high enough and has it's bill stuck in the ground.
Consider even the poor lammetjie that has it's chest spread open to fit onto a spit braai.
