Monster Shark Caught

The fight by Adlee Bruner and friends to pull the 11-foot mako shark onto the boat from the Gulf of Mexico took more than an hour on Saturday. But when they made it back to land, it was a record for the decades-old Destin Fishing Rodeo.
"It was tense," Bruner, 47, said about the fight to land the shark, which has a mouthful of huge, fearsome teeth. "I've fished for 40 years. I've never see one that big."
Bruner and his fishing buddies were on a 52-foot charter boat with Capt. Robert Hill, about 70 miles southwest of this beach city in the Florida Panhandle.
The fishermen first noticed the big mako because it kept eating grouper and scamp they had hooked.
"It was like 'Jaws,'" Hill said.
Hill hooked a two-foot amberine on as bait and tossed it out. The shark eventually hit it.
After the long fight, the shark was gaffed and eventually gave up after its tail was roped. But even then, the men could not get the big shark in the boat. They tied it to the stern with three ropes and made the four-hour trip back to land.
The shark was hoisted at the rodeo before a big crowd. It tipped the scale at 844.4 pounds.
After it was gutted, the mako still weighed 638 pounds, breaking the tournament's previous shark division record by 338 pounds.

ATTROCIOUS to see an animal like that dragged behind a boat so that selfish self absorbing humans can boast to curious onlookers. I hope those a**holes are surfers and find themselves taken as livebait pretty soon. Not an achievement/record or accomplishments whatsoever in my eyes. Totally sick

You can just see the sickening BRAGGING in that sentence and the OLD "JAWS" mentality: huge, fearsum teeth. WOOOOOSIES indeed. Hope this thread gets back to them some how!!!!!!!! :(

Hi Guys,
Truly a great waste.
Growing up the family always took EVERY fish caught home, and of those, very few were ever eaten. Thinking back now, I realise just how wasteful this was. Its amazing just how stupid us Humans can be......
I'm proud to say I practise catch and release, just so our kids can also take their kids fishing.....
Tight lines

makes you think the big american who are here to liberate us all are nothing but red necked hillbillies, with the attitude if it runs shoot it, swims gaff it. i know in the past it was the done thing but today a measurement and photo is just as good or even better.

probably a bunch of yuppies or such, have they never heard of circle hooks, even me as a begginer knows these things. how often do you see a mako let along catch one. maybe we should send them some ten week old smelly bait or such to show our appreciation

When deep sea fishing a fish has to be boated for it to count in a competition and I think that is why they boated the fish.
Oh and Drewmill if you go deep out to sea you see them quite often.
Dont get me wrong I support catch and release but also fish a lot of deepsea comps and the point scoring is a problem as you have to kill the fish.

these people exist here aswell......i remember seeing pics of my old man and uncle in the early oceans 50 days with dead sharks etc etc....it took them a year or so of that to realise what they were doing.......competitive angling wasnt what is now.......bottom line is we did it here aswell......bladly yanks need to catch a wake up and follow suit....i wonder if they know what tag and release is?

it is a wonder we dont see those biggies any more i have photos of what they used to catch at the old whaling station, nowadays a 200kg shark is considered big, compared to those days it probably would have been bait.

Guys - Calling these okes stupid and saying " I'm not surprised, they are Yanks" is just fookin stupid yourselves.... These okes are stupid for killing that shark because they are humans... who gives a flying f*ck where the hell they came from... generalising like that, and blaming the Yanks is the very small minded bullsh*t attitude that causes stereotypical racist idiocy....

There are 1000s of South African Anglers who are just as bad... if not worse than these guys... I agree its horrific that they killed this animal.... just as I think all Must Kill tournaments for Large Sharks and Billfish are horrific.... But making up pathetic insults like " I'm not surprised, they are Yanks" shows your ignorance, not theirs....

How many of you have ever been to the US? And spent any time there?
How many of you realise that the US is soooooo far ahead of the rest of the world in preserving their ocean stocks, and educating their nation about the plight of the ocean, that it makes us look like we are in the Dark Ages... which we are...
How many of you realise that 99.99999% of the US fishing population FOLLOW THEIR SIZE< BAG AND SEASONAL LIMITS in a Militant fashion, and wouldn't even dream of ever going over the limit, or fishing out of season....

How many of you realise that the US are light years ahead of the rest of us in research, tagging, conservation etc etc...

Just because they've got a f*ck wit red neck wan*er for a president, don't go and try and blame their whole nation for the stereotype that the rest of the world has all of a sudden decided is the trendy thing to do.." Oh, lets hate America, and everyone in America, they so frickin stupid, they just kill everything and blah blah blah..."
What a frickin crock!

No, I'm not a Yank... born and bred on this fine fu*king continent... But I've lived on that side of teh world at times, and I've recentl ( June/July 200& ) spent 2 months road tripping from one side of the country to the other ( San Diego to Key west ).... I have never met a more accomodating and caring bunch of people in my life.....

Of course they have their crackers/ignorant idiots/fools/red necks etc... but no more and no worse than we do....

Lets start blaming stupid people rather because they are fu*king stupid, rather than because of where they come from or what their background is.... Buddha knows we've had enough of that sh*t in this country....

Nepps rant over...
Peace

Steve you mullet, my comments weren't directed at you or anyone else in particular.... :temp:

I'm just tired of everyone going " Oh stupid Yanks" when they have no frickin clue what they are talking about....

Bleh... I was having one of those days.... I wrote that post after that Taxi incident I was talking to you about last night, so I guess my "Pi$$ed Off Hat" was on nice and firmly!!!!! ;)

Thank you so nuch for your spirited defence of americans.I am married to one and have seen first hand the ignorance dished out towards them.It makes me bitter 'cause it is essentially racism. No country is better than another. Some people just need to stop living in denial and turn the looking glass on themselves first.
