Just got back from Barra - the weather from 13 Dec - 26 Dec 2011 was quite good as the wind was generally no too bad. We had to work quite hard to get decent fish. See enclosed pics of some of thge fish we got. We again got a sailie in the bay (approx. 4-5km off-shore) right in front of Barra lodge.....it seems as if the sailies aren't always far out. Bottom fishing with block bait (fillet pieces) was fun but the small snappers are really pesky. We found that using cotton to tie your block bait to the hooks helped a little. Tip: Definitely use braid when bottom fishing as bite deterction is much better that on mono. Live bait seems to be the way to go if you wanna avoid the peckers on the reefs. There are some very good size bottoms to be had (see enclosed pic of monster potato bass) - PLEASE NOTE: It was released succesfully!! Do not take them out - you will get a huge fine if found out!! Medium sized pink and blue (metal) jet-head trolling lures produced many bites (e.g Dorado and couta). This lure was trolled at 12 - 17km/hour. Tip: tie a treble traling hook onto your jet head as this will improve the number of couta that you will succesfully hook. The shallow reef near lighthouse point (directly in front of the main beach is quite productive early mornings) - you can't miss it - it is heavily frequented by the local subsistence fishermen. Runway reef (at the inflow into the lagoon area was dead) - we had very little hits on drift bait. Spinning near Pansy island with Onde Ondas however produced some takes. We saw some very large GT in the main channel - i.e. between Pansy island and the open water. Generally the main cahnnels flowing into the lagoon is quite nice when the wind is bad offshore. Our next trip: BD / Bazaruto in April 2012.
