Millibangala GPS co-ordinates & info

Hi guys

A couple mates and I are planning a trip down to Mozambique in December (So the planning starts now)

We would like to fish Millibangalala but none of us have ever been there or fished it before. I know that it's very "rustic" with no facilities at all, just an open camp site...which is exactly what we want - totally unwind and focus completely on the fishing.

Can anybody give us GPS co-ordinates or directions from Durbs. ANY other info, like what to expect,what to watch out for, permits, regulations, target species, special baits, what not to forget, where to fish etc..ANY AND EVERY LITTLE PIECE OF INFO on the place will be hugely appreciated !!! ^^..

Hey Finchaser,
I see no one has replied, let me try help just a little, I was last there 10 years ago, it is awesome to say the least.
You go up through kosi boarder post, through past Malongane till you get to the bad tar road from Mamoli, turn left and go up that till you see a rickety sign showing Elephant park to the right, follow that to the elephant park gates which are in the middle of the elephant park, (imagine the boarder of elephant park running in a semi circle, coast to coast starting just north of Mamoli) You have gone around the boarder to the inland extreme of the semi circle where the gate is. You pay to enter the park and basically head straight towards the coast as Milli is in the middle. Locals will guide you, slow trip, from gate to coast, 2 to 3 hours.
Here is a well with water than you can use for shower water and rinse gear, a dive camp did set up a portable shower but not sure it is still there. Long-drop for toilet, the rest you take. Your own drinking water and everything else I used those portable black bag showers you leave on your car bonnet during the day to warm up. Lots of trees for camping under as it gets very hot. Lots of Mozzies, take repellent, eat garlic, drink Captain rum.
There is plenty reef. It runs in layers parallel to the beach so easy to find. Plenty Kingies, karkob, monster cuda, muscle cracker.
In short, take absolutely everything you might need, water, showers, toilet paper, refrigeration, lighting etc, you will love it.
Hope this helps a little, sorry, no gps marks.

Thanks Dooma. That helps alot. Was thinking of taking my fishing ski and it sounds like with the reefs running parallel to the beach, the launch may be slightly protected. Sounds awesome and your info really gives a clearer picture of what to expect.

Hi Finchaser,

Milli is beautiful and pretty straightforward travel wise. I will check what marks I have but think I have a track mark from the Border somewhere.

I don't fish R&S so not able to give much advice there, other than there is some nice water right in front of the main entrance to the beach with scattered rock. Sealice has been productive in these spots from what I remembered.

Make sure you get a fishing license from the local parks officer and he can also give you an export license for up to max 5kgs of fish fillets (Think this still applies?).

Fishing offshore is good. I also fish off a ski and the launch is pretty doable in almost most conditions but a little worse on the NE wind. It is a fairly long launch protected on the right by the reef. Unfortunately it is not a straight sheltered launch but never the less.

There is good reef all offshore from the 5m mark to around 25m mark holding lots of couta, kingies, prodigals etc. Reef fish a pretty thick so be careful of baits close to the bottom. There is also deeper reef in around 40m mark and the tuna / dorries are usually quite thick there. Throwing poppers and plugs around the reef is very productive for kingies. Try and see where the fusiliers are holding and throw are them! Kingies love them!

There are marks for pinnacles which is around 7km north of Milli and quite a paddle. The jigging / dropshotting is very good but the taxmen are wild there too!

You can drive south to Dobela if the Westerly is blowing and similar launch to Milli. Scattered reef in 20m mark and its around 7km paddle back to Milli which is a nice downwind trip.

Camping is basic with a well (not drinking quality water, only showering etc) and long drop only, nothing else. Long drop was terrible last time I was there meaning some walks down the beach for most people but scenic view.

No cellphone reception in camp but you drive 5 minutes out an up the mountain where you can get.

Hi guys.
Just when you think your planning is going great, someone throws a spanner in the works.

Some of our social club members have voiced concern about going Mozambique in December. Apparently, they've heard, that the permit prices are higher during peak season and it's more difficult to get them. Also that the quota of fish you are allowed to catch is dropped, not that we plan on keeping more than one or 2 per day for the braai. But the most alarming rumor is that the fishing is dead/bad in December (Opposite of what I've heard)and that we should rather go in May/June/July.

I don't like listening to opinions I don't trust so I'm aking you guys, who have been to that spot (Milli)specifically and fished Mozambique in general. I value your opinion.

Please let me know if this true so that we can make alternative arrangements or cancel completely. The trip is planned for 14th to 21st December with spring tide (full moon unfortunately)being smack-dead in the middle on the 17th.

Hi bud!

As for prices being higher in Dec for permits, I dont know? As with everything being a bit more expensive in Dec everywhere I would not be to concerned about that! As far as I know, quotas are still the same for fish being taken!

Dont know who told you that Dec's a bad for fishing Moz? In my opinion, I only fish far north coast and Moz in the summer months! From Nov - May...

You still cant book a spot but normally there is space available. as for Fishing offshore At Milli any spot is a good spot.
