Mercury 150 Hp 3 liter Fourstroke

I have just spent a day fishing with a mate who recently fitted one to his 6.7m alloy boat. I was very impressed with the performance of the engine. It is quiet, torquey and economical. We did 30 odd nautical miles and got the speed up to 37 knots for some stretches and burnt about 30 liters of fuel. The economy could have been better if we stuck to a cruising speed of 22 to 25 knots and once the engine has loosened up a bit as it has only done 12 hours.

The Suzuki, good engine as it is, has nothing in common with the Merc!

the suzuki 150 is a 3l engine, and was class leadind in weight and economy. mercury used to just supercharge a smaller engine but realised theres no replacement for displacement. so they made a 3l thats slightly bigger than the suzukis 150 and shaved off a part or too to make it 10 kg lighter. thats it, a copy because there verado range is heavy expensive and gass guzzlers. but remember the suzuki 150 has been carving it up as best in class and its been around a while. wont be suprised if new future df 150 blows everything out the water. but than why fix something thats not broken. 150 df track record speaks for itself. mercury 150 looks like a fantastic machine but i just find it ironic the west copying the east. only time will tell if its a great engine as well as pricing here in SA!!!

I am also a Suzuki fan. I have two 40 Suzuki's (2008 mod)on my 15ft Navarone. Very impressed with economy and quiet operation. Unfortunately the boat cannot plane with one engine running. Therefore was considering fitting only one bigger engine. My choice is the Suzuki 140, however I was impressed with the Merc 150 specs.

The new merc 150 is a completely different and better engine than the 140 suzuki in terms of specifications. The 150 merc and suzuki may only be 10 hp more but they are much bigger engines. The suzuki 140 hp is essentially at 115hp engine.

Personally on your size craft a 140 hp suzuki is more than adequate and there is some fantastic pricing , i think i 140 HP suzuki is R109 000 which is pretty hard to beat in SA!

FE, you are obviously a big Suzuki fan and there is nothing wrong with that. The Suzuki is not really a true 3 liter (2868cc or thereabouts). I very much doubt that the Mercury engineers sat down and decided to copy the Suzuki. A more likely scenario is that they looked at what the market wants and all the players in the market (Yamaha and Honda produce some very good 150hp four stroke in line four cylinder engines too) and tried to design and manufacture a class leading product. On paper they seem to have succeeded but only time will tell wether it will be reliable too of course.

The question asked in the first post was wether anybody had some experience with the new Merc and I replied to the question having spent a day on a boat fitted with one.

I agree...only time will tell. Suzuki already proved itself. This 150 Merc might be the one that restores Mercury's 4 stroke status

hey seadoc, i am a bit of a Suzuki fan:SSS which is pretty obvious but i was just trying to cause some healthy debate on the subject. Its great to get some first hand experience on the engine from you because i haven't even seen the mercury yet. I'm sure they are going to be pushing it hard, see a sealiner just fitted out his new 630 cobra cat with 2 x the new 150 mercs. Really i dont think there is much in it between brands, honda, merc, suzuki, and yam all top quality products. Its only price and service in your local area that matters...and maybe personal choice..

small boat big fish, what is mercury's support like near you?

I just received an email from Silverlake marine (Merc agents). They have two customers that fitted twin 150 Merc's 4strokes. Contact them if you want any feedback.

It is proof that they are serious about this engine. As a fisherman I am happy to see that they took our needs into consideration. They have a video about the engine at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnUKS3L-i_g&feature=player_embedded

All good, FE, we all have our favourates and I agree wholeheartedly with your comments on how to choose an engine! More competition amongst manufacturers means better products for us to choose from.

It is an absolute gem of a motor! We have them on our boat and I can’t stop raving about them. They are quiet and have massive torque - we are running 19 pitch props and are still able to get on the plane with one motor with relative ease. We haven’t been out much due to the weather lately but first impressions is that they are already more fuel efficient than the 90hp 2 strokes we had on our last boat. Time will tell, but from what i have heard merc have really pulled out all the stops for this motor.

mercury 5 yr warranty, beat that?
if the motor is as good as the paper says, its gona be very difficult for other brands to compete just by making a better motor, they gona HAVE to up there warranty's!
And let me tell you this, i was recently in the market for mid range four stroke, suzuki couldnt come close to what i paid for the mercs, i had no option but to buy the mercs looking at price and warranty....
Anyways, this is very healthy for the outboard industry, one brand striving to beat the next means better products and services to the consumer...

I hope the 150's turn out to be fantastic and reliable motors, so that we can see their rivals strive to beat that...

just make sure you motors are serviced at merc dealers on time every time otherwise that warrenty is worth nothing
