Hi All,

We have fished Mazeppa Bay since 2009. But we have always fished there between March and June. We have had some awesome success there and some good hidings as well.

For a change we will be going to down to Mazeppa Bay in August.

I would like to know if someone has fished there that time of the year.

I too have not been there in August , I did ask zola the gillie when and where is best for grunter. August from tiny's was his reply, and he says good size as well. He then went on to say the wind can be hectic in August . If you have a kite at least you'll see the wind as friends rather than foe.

We will be taking about 4 kite's with. Will never again go to Mazeppa without a kite. We have been taking a kite along the last 3 years. I think it will be good to see if someone has been there and what the reports will be like as they say Mazeppa can be red hot or Ice Cold.

Jip Gareth will be interesting to see what's going to happen. We all know that Mazeppa Bay is a special place. Just would like to know what we will be in for tho.

Gareth did you order a Muller's kite or just some more Clips for the other Kite's?

We were there in September about 2 years ago and got 2 hidings and landed two greys - 50kg each and one hammer - 20kgs. Wind was a problem.

I didn't order from mullers yet , I'm going to order clips and kite line . I ordered two more kites from windsong , it has been a month already and I haven't received them yet

i have been to mazeppa in almost every month. I did two Aug. strips. on the firs one i landed the biggest fish. A 91kg Spinner shark and got smashed up a few times. The wind was a problem but i didn't fish with kite then. Now i take them everywhere. The second time we just couldn't go wrong. We landed so many fish its a sin and all with casting and sliding. The wind was almost non existing for the hole 7 days. Again we landed very big sharks and rays. That time of the year the very big steenbras also come out. We got them to over 10kg. Good luck.

Mazeppa works with a secret light-switch somewhere in the universe ,it can produce (or not) at will. Some of you may remember a former member we had on here.The late Edley van Eeden I think was his name.If memory serves me right, then he had the privilege of taking clients/friends down to Mazeppa 57 times in one particular year. I don't think the time of year and or weather played any role in his decision-making.

Back yonder when one could still fish in the Bashee-river area(conservancy now),they used to have the ''piggy-comp''(pignose grunter), in August every year(again if memory serves me right).At the same time we would catch kobbies of the island and beach(river-mouth) at Bashee,I cant think that August for Mazeppa would yield any less..

::tight:

p.s Thunder or one of the older brigade kite-anglers may verify this,but I suspect that in the 80's the annual Mazeppa 1000 kite compo was held each year in August.?

We kind of have the Kite thing sorted as we use a KP spooled with dackron to fly the kite's. That's is good to hear that the big steenbras are there that time of the year. I haven't targeted them in years. Biggest one I have caught is a small 8kg one.

We will also be doing some tagging so it will be nice to tag some of them as well. Till today my best trip at Mazeppa Bay was when we were 4 guys fishing and in 2 days we had over 50 pickups. I have never had to respool my reel so many times in one day.
