I am looking at buying a 1998 swift 16ft with a 75hp Mariner 2 stroke. I heard these boats are very heavy. Will this motor be strong enough.

Galaxy, unless you are looking to race, it will be fine. If you look around, you will see a lot of flamingo boats and Baronets using 90Hp. With that Hp, they move very quickly, you won't be able to reach 70 Km/H, but the 75 will do. I would strongly urge you to test drive the boat, get the seller to meet you at the North End lake and see how it goes. That will answer your question.

Thanks, they should be fitting the motor this week and then I will test drive before I plan on purchasing. It's the right thing to do.^^..

Hi Galaxy

You are doing the right thing by test driving before buying. I have the same year boat with 2 X 60 HP yamahas on the back , my top speed is around 47Km/h.

It is a heavy boat for its size but a very strong hull and mine being a centre console it has versatility of being a fishing boat on one day and a family boat the next.

What props you running? You should be getting very close to 60km/h (if not more) with those motors on a Swift 160. I had a similar boat (actually bigger - Benguela 540 - which is also heavy) with 2 x 60's with 14" props and I got up to 65km/h. Not that its all about top end speed as she jumped out of the hole as well.

Disappointing factor happened. I was told that the boat was a Mallards Swift, but when I went to have a look I noticed that it was a Mallards Concept. The hull is too shallow for my needs.

I will still keep looking for a Swift.:walk

Don't limit yourself to only a Swift, there are lots of good multi-purpose boats in that category. Explorer 510, Sunfish 1700 (now called Bengeula 17), Ace Adventure 16'1 etc.
All very well made boats that are just as good (some would say better) than a Swift.
