I looked at building one. And unless you have all the bits and pieces lying around, it's cheaper to buy one. I got mine for R870 + VAT at Adendorf. R870 will only just buy the motor.

you get some very good small [600mm bed] lathes from china in the market place , builders wharehouse was selling for 690.00 the other day plus set chisels
