Lures for Edibles

Hi Guys.

It's that time of the year again, Fishermans Christmas is upon us, stoking the fire of desire to catch fish during the Sardine season.

What would you guys suggest would be the best Spoons/Plugs to using on a spinning or heavy drop-shot set-up to target edibles like Garrick etc during this prime time? What sort of retrieval rate would also be ideal?????

Want to get my young son into some spinning and need to keep his interest up.

Thanx and may this season be fruitful and merry to all Fisherman, tight lines.^^..:wfish

Hi Dooma,

Yeah, been wondering the same thing. I've just gone with the standard Ice Cream Cone plug.

And then the weight that works your rig properly for that extra distance. I vary the retrieval rate, as long as its on the surface. I picked up a shad on it this weekend on a slower retrieve down at Green Point.

I haven't seen much action in the water, but heard if the stories are to be believed as many as 20 Garrick and a bunch of Shad came out at Winkle rocks over the past weekend.

As far as spoons go, same story. I have a few different types etc.. As long as they are nice and shiny they should work. Here again vary retrieval rate.

Hope that helps.

Tight lines:fishn

Nice one StrikerZA, thanx for that, seems everyone is a bit nervous to impart some knowledge with us to get some on's.^^..

So chisel-nose is the path to follow then, do the same rules apply for the needle-nose that you know of??

Got some interest in a 46gr Chase spoon the other day, dayglo was working, we were being hit just behind shore-break off LaLucia, there was lots of seaweed in the water. My son landed a small Kingie, I lost what looked like a Bonefish, bad hook-up.

Offshore, had some success with the replica Onde Onde type made by Maria, their spoons are proving to be quite fruitful at a really decent price, unfortunately, no hits from the beach yet but am still working on retrieval rate on that, I think the whipping action is needed there fore some movement on the sprat. Maybe with the sards season, things will change with that, nice sards colours are available.

Hi all.

It is an exciting time when the Leeries come on. Here in PE the Leeries season is coming to and end and these Leeries will be making their way up the Natal coast.
We had a great Leeries season and have tagged and released close to 100 Leeries amongst the group I fish with.
Please chaps, I ask, release the tagged fish. I have no problems if you take a fish out every now and then. But the tagged fish could you record and release again.

Many thanks and enjoy the season.

I concur Chaps, it's the story of life isn't it, it's all about the chase, once caught, tag & release::S.

Always like to take about 2 Garrick out per season, the rest are for sport, real gentleman fighters aren't they. Only ever catch them on bait hence enquiry re plugs. Prefer our snoek on the braai to be honest. The snoek are loving the dusters at the moment. Tried a bright green wieghted stick bait the other day too, proved popular,  got about 7 snoek, the one for the pot was a bus. Even got a shoal cuda on the duster, he's back out there hopefully telling his mates about delicious looking but tough delicasies that are up for offer at backline.

Well done to you boys in PE, I applaued you, that's the spirit of fishing to me.:fswim

Thanx chaps, yep, really keen for a good sard season to really get under way, why not come up and join us for prime time, you guys will always be welcome.

I've had great success on bullet spoons, never tried the chase variety though but the chrome triton 70-odd gram and the glow in the dark iron candy have been my top spoons of late, shad go ape for them and had kob take the chrome triton which is a bit fatter/wider, on a slower retrieve. Chisel nose works for garrick and I've also had good success on a 3oz bimini blue chisel nose plug.. :wfish
