So a few years ago I stopped fishing completely, lifes priorities forced me to do that.
For years I refused to touch a fishing rod.
Sold most of my Rock & Surf and Boat tackle but kept all my light tackle stuff ...
To cut a long story short, son nagged and nagged me that we start fishing together ...
Well I'm like a Citi Golf, just a light push and I start !
For his 14th birthday I bought him a new Daiwa Exceller 3000 and filled it with 20lb braid, and gave him 1 of my 8ft Exceller rods.
For myself I still have my old Exceller-S 3000 filled with 15lb Stren braid, paired with a 8ft Exceller rod.
Still had a good supply of lures including a load of Mccarthy soft plastics and jigheads, and a few bucktail jigs.
We've since gone fishing twice, but mostly with bait.
My passion is lures, so ...
I told him we could go fishing today on 1 condition, we only takes lures, to which he reluctantly agreed.
At 7am he had to drag my tired bum out of bed, and off we went to Swartkops (For safety concerns I did not want us to get there while it was dark.)
At 8 we parked by the train bridge and started the long muddy walk with spinning tackle only.
Beautiful day, a little cold but sunny, and it was halfway through a strong outgoing tide.
We spent a good 3 hours of throwing everything but ourselves in the river, and not even rewarded with the slightest bump.
Tried topwater lures, bucktails and softplastics, nothing at all.
We each must have tried 10 different lures each and done in excess of 200 throws.
Told him to be patient, wait for the tide to turn, but the young man wasn't very positive anymore.
By now the tide had stopped pushing and was now in the calm stage just before the push.
A passing angler was fishing bucktail, got a bump, and then he went on...
So quickly we went from soft plastics on my rod and topwater on his rod to bucktails
Ethan grabbed the white bucktail and I was forced to use a heavy white olive bucktail.
Not long and Ethan went on and landed a small Leerie
Then another and another
I was now 3-0 down !
I then changed to a old 1/2oz Spro Blue bucktail that I had (my preference is white or white olive 1/2 oz), but had to use what I had.
I did about 20 casts and then I got a bump, but no hookup.
By this time Ethan had landed 4 leeries.
Then I went on and landed a small leerie, then another and another.
Ethan hooked up with another 1 but lost it at his feet.
Score was now Ethan 4 Dad 3.
And then things went quiet again.
Tide was pushing hard again and wind started picking up.
We walked back to the car and tried for some more fish but no further action.
Not a bad day, considering I haven't fished with lures for a few years.
First trip landed 7 fish, let's see what the future holds in for our lure fishing trips
