The Penn 501 is rather rare now days, of course you will not find a new one in SA. Way back the 80s and before they were around. If you are really lucky, you might find one in a pawn shop, but these get scooped up by collectors

Perhaps if you have money to cover the exchange rate you can try and get one the US?

I have one in my collection - sadly not for sale.

Why don't you just stick with a 500? You can get them new for between 750 - 850?

Keep in mind although the 2 have to the same guts, should you manage to get a 501 with bakalite spool, and say it breaks you will sit with the same problem - referring to the spool - no spares in SA, again you will have to import it. Conclusion - get yourself a 500 instead.

Yes, they use to have, try 'Basil Manning' & 'Ganis Angling' - just do an internet search, you should find the contact details, it might be better to call them instead of email - quicker reply.

Evening all SL's.....

I rather hop onto this thread than to start a new one.

I am also looking for a Penn Jigmaster 501 (Baby Jigmaster) in a very good condition.

Am in contact with 2 prospective sellers, but need much more options before taking a final decision.

I am in contact with another 2 friends nl. Alan in W.Cape & Fritz in Pta who can help, but as explained I need more options ito parts as well. (Long story)

I you might know of Penn repairman, owners, collectors or renowned tackleshops still having old stock, or still having such spares & if you can refer me to would be a great help, so that one can broaden your search area & ideal is to get the ods & ends together from the okes to make my dream come true.
You hardly find Penn 501 in a new condition......used but in semi bad condition yes.

Please be on the lookout & drop me a name & contact detail in PM.

Highly appreciated.

Good day Ben, hope you are well ,sorry for delayed response, special thanks too you and your friend Alan from the Cape, you have given this old girl a few more decades of service, you guys are true gentleman and highly appreciate your time, effort and knowledge, I rebuilt most of the reel with parts from Alan’s Donor reel, his reels drivetrain was in way better condition, I will def use this reel like it was intended to, I have enough spares to keep her going 🙂 thank you for also starting another addiction, i have loaded half the spool with old thick Dacron and topped of with awashima big game 35mm , will send you and Alan a picture of the first fish I pull out 👌

finished reel in perfecting working order ready for some action  !
Hi there Jonathan,
It was an absolute pleasure to help another fellow angler who shares the passion of old Penn reels.

I am happy to see the "gogga" had bitten you, & now it is the next step.....which Penn next ?😇😊

All I can say it is an addictive hobby but lotsa fun to be had & a very interesting & informative history.

Enjoy the reel & catch a monster Jonathan. 🤜🤛
