LOOKING for a DROPSHOT ROD,about 8ft.

This is not a rod for big GT's ! But neither is a 4000 size reel either.
4000 size reel with this 8ft rod is fine for the lighter stuff

For the GT's I would look at the Shimano Exage Spinning rods, the 10ft is rated to cast 200 grams and the 8ft I think 160grams, that coupled with a 6000 to 8000 of the higher end grinders could take on the GT's, good reels from Shimano would be Sustain, Stradic, Stella and so forth, don't know the top end Daiwa reels.

I'm fighting VERY HARD with myself, trying to stop myself from buying the 10ft Exage Spinning rod to throw 4-5 ounce dropshots for Yellowtail from the side. I think it's a fight (not buying the rod) that I'm gonna lose sooner rather than later.

Would love a Berkley air Rod, but at that price IT IS OVERPRICED !

I have had that 10ft Exage in my hands sooo many times and kept on telling myself to wait till commercial marine gets a berkley air rod, but I really wont buy it if it's more expensive than the Exage

Agree with you Neil… I fish with the 8ft heavy passion stick & just spoiled myself over December with the Exage 80 (what a rod!!), rated to cast 5oz, for the heavy stuff. Gonna fit it out with a Penn Sargus 5000/6000. Just waitning for the $$$. Buying the reel is not the only problem… It’s the braid that comes along with it…

Agree with Zeyn on berkley air 9ft heavy. fit stella 4000 reel with 18lb braid and you have versatile combo that will handle dropshots, baits, small live baits, spoons, plugs, etc.

Great parabolic action in rod and can also add biggest fish caught is about 12kg Gt on this set up.

Check out the angling With blackfin dropshot tactics - the next level dvd! Rob Kyle catches a gt of twenty plus kilos using a stradic 4000 and 10lb fireline, and Wesley Rapson gets one of around 30kilos using a sustain 8000 and 14lb fireline. Both of them were using the berkley air 9ft extra heavy. Getting mine soon cant wait!

I had one in my hands today (Berkley Air), lovely rod, personally can't see it casting 3oz jigheads, point feels to light to me, I would say 2oz, but not 3.

But that's just my opinion

Better believe it Neil, we casted 3 Oz jig's with Berkley Air 9' at Sodwana last week! Advantage of this rod is it weighs a third or half of other compatible rods.

I however recently bought Posseidon 3-5oz 12.5 ft 3 piece scratching and surf spinning rod, and am really impressed by what it can handle. Fairly strong backbone.

My brother and son bought Sensation Shad or Super Shad, bait casting rods, also around 11.5 to 12 ft but unfortunately 2 piece. Also seems to be HMG blanks, stiff backbone and we were very pleasantly surprised.  Son replaced guides with Fuji SiC guides and it turned into a beautiful rod.

The Sensation is good value for money and one should sometimes look past a name and physically inspect and feel a rod before making costly decissions.

Will be down in Balito end March and will take my Posseidon along, think it is very versatile for my level of fishing. However, and Neil gave me the advice, I think with the heavy Penn spinning reel I have on it, does not put enough action into dropshot lures.

You see that EXACTLY is my problem.

I keep telling myself I don't need it, or I can find another rod at half the price, but man oh man, it weighs NEXT TO NOTHING, which makes it great for artificial angling.

I'll wait for the prices to come down
