Line - a contentious issue

Big fish want big bait and they don’t want to work for it. In winter their metabolism slows down a lot and using up energy chasing pray will mean they need to eat more as food = energy. So the bigger meal they can get the later they can eat again. So basically yes big bait fished really slowly will work. But just remember that you basically have to put the lure right on his head

Yeah thanks bud - but I am scared of scrat.........LOL
Anyways I hate trying to fish with a babbie - especially bass in winter when you got to fish deep slow and long.

And Now Back to the Original question.......

P-Line (Halo) I've tried everything, fire line, braid, flurocarbons in all the colours and makes, and since I strapped P-Line (halo) to all my reels (freshy ones) I've never looked back, it's just THEEEEEE most awsome line around these days, which reminds me there's a new P-Line out, golden-yellowish box can't remeber the model name but it's deffs P-line, have any of you seen the stuff?

Good thread but not contentious at all, just a matter of personal taste.

Personally I don't think there is 1 line for all applications and if you want to become more than the occasional fisherman you need different rigs for different applications.

i.e your not going to use Berkley big game 30lb line for pitching and flipping a weightless fluke, just as your not going to use 8lb fluoro for flipping a 3/4 ounce jig into heavy cover.

Over the years I have tried so many, these are my findings and opinions.

A: Mono
When looking at mono I use nothing more than DoubleX Hi-Abrasion in white. The reason I use white is because it has very low vis in the water but with a pair of polarized sunglasses it is high vis above the water making it easy to detect the bite visually, this is very important in winter. I have tried the DoubleX legend and Platinum, personally I just find the Hi-abrasion better. Tried Berkley big game, suffix, silstar, Trilene to mention just a few and have had various gripes from water absorption, low abrasion properties, excessive stretch, high memory and wide line diameters. DoubleX Hi abrasion is cheap enough to re spool as often as you like @ about R100 for 600m. I use 12lb for cranking and 14lb for general plastics in low light conditions. To take mono of the market would cause major upsets in the pro circuit as it certainly has it's place and functionality and many still claim it is the best tool for slow cranking as it has stretch and prevents you ripping the crank out the fishes mouth when you feel a knock like you would with fluoro. I am not talking power fishing when your looking for an aggressive reaction type take.

B: Fluoro
I have been through hordes including Pline and Vanish but just have never got the feel for them, the only reason I use fluoro these days is as a leader to braid and I use Pline as I find it has better knot strength (double uni knot)

C: Braid
Again there is so much available and I have tried hordes, certain braids are designed for bait casters and others are designed for spinning reels. The worst I have used is Berkley fireline, The best I have used is Spiderwire Stealth and DoubleX Viper (20lb and 35lb). Spiderwire being a bit harder and square being ideal for baitcasters and center spins and the doubleX being softer and rounder perfect for spinning reels although at half the price of spider wire I also find it perfect for baitcasters although I must admit I dont do much casting with the baitcaster and doubleX viper.

d: Hybrid line (mixed or coated)

Due to the fact that I couldn't find a fluoro that I like and I knew I was missing out on a lot of pro's that fluoro line offers I started to experiment with Hybrid line. I tried the Awa-shima Ion, the Tournament grade and various others. However much to my delight I found the Suffix Duo-core to be absolutely fantastic, it has excellent line diameter compared to line strength (15.3lb - 0.30mm, it has virtually zero vis, virtually no memory, knot strength is the best, hardly any stretch and above all it is very well priced at less than R100 for 600m, if it were three times the price I wouldnt use anything else.

Anyway line is a personal choice and you have to use what your comfortable and confident with, but if you looking for new line and don't know what to try don't be scared to try my suggestions.
