Line - a contentious issue

Which line do you guys use?

I have tried just about everything on the market and have settled for Double X power plus in white - it has a fairly thick diameter but is highly abrasive resistant -been fishing with it for 8 years now -awesome stuff.

When I fished Pongola with VC he was fishing with P-Line - looks like it has an awesome diameter and low memory but damn that stuff costs plenty $$$$ Somewhere in the region of R250 for 300yds - eish as they say.

Ive been using Berkley Trilene XL smooth casting for a couple of months now, and a very good strong line, but not that smooth as the name say, my casting has been better with other lines but i must say this line doesnt brake that easy, i fish on, i think 5kg line
Costs about R150.00
So if you guys know about a line that is very nice for casting, please post it here.

My reply bombed out 1st time, so I'll try again.

Like Ryan says, this is a contentious issue, and an item of tackle, probably the second most important one at that, which will cost you heaps of money before finding what works for you.

Line is a massive category in bass fishing and you need to split it into 4 categories to campare apples with apples. These categories being Monofilament, Flourocarbon, Braid and then mixtures like flouro coated mono etc. I only use the first three. No funny mixes.

Flourocarbon is my main line and have 5 out of 8 rigs loaded with flouro. I use Siglon as it certainly delivers on the value for money aspect, as well as XPS. I wasted thousands, and I literally mean thousands of rands over an 18 month period looking for a flouro line that I was happy with. I use Siglon in the 15 to 17lb range and XPS for the lighter applications. One thing I noted with flouro is that the knot you use does have a effect. I use the palomar knot and Trilene knot on Jigs when using flouro. Flouro is a springier line than mono, but that is what gives it sensitivity. I have used some really top brands and hated all of them, so be careful what you go for.

Monofilament is slowly being removed from my arsenal, but I use simple Berkley Big Game in clear nowadays. I used to use Double X Platinum and found it to be an awesome line and good on the budget. It does coil up a bit, but tie it to a fence pole and give it a good stretch once in a while and you'll be good to go again.

Braid has recently been reintroduced on my side. I struggled to find a braid that cast well, but didn't wear away the eyes on my rods. I gave it up as a bad joke until I got given some imported Asian stuff that is truly awesome. Casts like a bomb and doesn't wear your rod like others. The knot strength to leader is a bit of an issue, but have found a way to get around that. Previously I used Fireline braid and found it to be the best of the bunch, but still didn't like it.

So, before you rush out and buy line, find the application you want it for before you buy. I fish plastics on flouro only, crank on mono and flouro, and fish frogs on heavy mono or braid. I also do some shallow cranking on braid with flouro leader.

Hope this helps.

Basslover, if you enjoy the Berkley range of monofilament lines, then try and find some Stren magnathin. It's packaged in a turquoise box. The 10lb is a bit sketchy on the knot strength side, but heavier than that and you have a top class monofilament line. I used that before I came to the conclusion that I fish mono so seldomly that it didn't make sense to invest a lot of money in line that gets cooked in the rod hatch and never used ;) That's the reason I use Berkley Big Game now.

Well as Revo I also tried and tested a lot of lines out on the market today and will never change from what I am using now. Currently my rods are spooled up with 10, 12 and 15LB PLine Halo. I use 20LB Halo on my casting Jig rod for fishing just of structure and I use 50lb Braid Spiderwire for fishing in structure

I use a lot of the stuff and economy is important. My buddy swears by Double X and uses nothing else. I switched to
Sufix XL Strong about 4 years ago and have found it lives up to its claims and suits my needs in every respect. http://www.sufix.com/FishingLine/Monofishingline.htm

Sho, this is gonna be a looong thread! I think I musy have about a dozen half empty rolls of line at the moment from testing and trying out different combinations.

Basically from my experiences, mono is out, I dont really see any use for it considering the other options available. I've tried a whole reel of fluoro and to be honest the crows nests I ened up with were just too many to consider keeping that config. I started using braid about 10 years ago when my old man lent me a reel with it on, since then it just never made sense to use anything else until the last couple of years.

Basically all my setups are some sort of braid with Gamma fluoro leaders, Suffix is a brilliant braid and really does last a long time and holds its shape. I found that the cheaper braids tend to fray a lot and end up looking like a piece of manlged cotton. Fireline is a beaut but the prices scare a lot of people away. I picked up on the DropShotting forum that Kingfisher brought a "Pro Casting Braid" which is basically their version of Fireline (Bonded Braid), I bought myself some and havent had any problems, even the problems with line not winding back onto the reel and coming off in "loops" when casting disappeared, the price is also right. Plus the diameter of the bonded lines is really thin too, I havent yet noticed wear on the eyes, yet.

So the setups I've settled with on my reels is a Gamma 12 pound floro leader with 20 pound KingFisher Pro Casting Braid, the knot I use to join the leader is a variartion of the bloodknot that works extremly well if you tie it correctly.
