Light tackle mad

Every Saterday and Sunday i watch ESPN and watch how the yanks have a blast catching fish on light tackle weather it's bone fish or red fish the yanks are light tackle experts and with art lure nog all....

Why arnt we South Africans like that about light tackle?

I mean it's not like we havent got the fish to target we have a wide range of target species garick, kob, shad, kingy's, grunter, springer, pompano and the list just go's on, we are just far more comfortable standing with a big ass rod the whole day with beer in hand talking crap while we wait for fish to come to us...

I look at some of them, they have it down to a fine art, why havent we caught on?

Think about it..

i am LIGHT TACKLE MAD , i love fishing light , you really have to work a big fish nicely and outplay the fish , makes it much more sportman like, which i like .

Most people think LT are limited , but not really ,reckon the guys up in Natal have more species to target with LT , than us down here in Cpt.

We don't have 14,000km of coastline which includes a few thousand of flats where there are no raging currents and rocks being pounded by ocean surf.

The USA and Aus have huge tournaments. USA in the flats and Aus in the myriad of estuaries they have.

They can move the tournaments around so as to not over pressure the fish. Here we'd fish Langebaan (already all the boat guys fish light there) the next week one of the Harbours the St Lucia and then repeat the setup.

Remember we have a LTB facet as well as Artlure that practise the light tackle (sub 4kg) facet.

We have a big light tackle fraternity, you're maybe the one not involved in it?

Some more differences.....there, shad are seen as a nuisance fish, they grow from ten to thirty pounds, and are returned almost without thought.

Here they're murdered within an inch of their lives as soon as they're big enough to take a small hook, and taken home for the pot, or reduced to R 20 notes to buy dop 'n drugs...

There, water quality is taken seriously by the proper authorities- the law is enforced and perpetrators are fined heavily. Here, everyone looks the other way.

Their fisheries officers are given a car, a gun, a laptop and all the time they need to apprehend anyone who is breaking the law. Here, our guys are confined to the office because there is not sufficient  manpower, petrol or political will..

Catch and release there is almost a given...here, it is an exception.

I could go on and on - but why should we all be depressed?

+1 fish4fun i think you have hit the nail on the head there bru its like comparing apples with oranges. We as south africans dont stand a chance with the so called subsistance "rapists" who completely pull the ring out of our fish stocks, and like you say the "oficials" who seem to care cant do anything to help and those who can help dont give a damn, but with that said just recently i have been fishing off durban with light tackle and been having too much fun with bonnies, small yellowfin, spinner sharks, and the odd snoek,

Light is the only way to go 4 me personally. It is just a shame that we do not get the same range available to us as those guys in the US. Somewhere our systems are raping us on imports thus the expense we have to suffer for light tackle. I've been @ Academy & BassPro in the states, the light tackle section is as big as our Pick & Pay never mind the rest. They have such a wide collection and very affordable due to the competition, it's unbelievable. Just have a look on their web sites and you'll get a good idea.
Maybe that is another reason why their exposure is so much bigger.

On Saturday caught a elf and a yellowbelly rockcod (and some really really big strepies) on a rod rated 3/4 ounce with a Daiwa Regal and 6lb Fireline.

Lots and lots of fun, elf gave me a GREAT fight on the size 12 hook with 7kg Leader and the Rockcod reefed me twice before I landed and released him.

Man it was fun !
