Light tackle fun

Fished the Breede banks this past weekend. Our conversion rate was awefull as we missed / lost about half the fish we hooked. I was using an 8ft rod and 2500 grinder and my boet a 7ft rod and also a 2500 grinder. I must admit that we were a bit jealous of the people on the boats pulling in fish after fish, but we had great fun none the less.

The Saturday morning we headed to the mouth to pump some prawns and decided to make a throw right there. My boet caught this little guy on his first cast. A quick photo and then released him...

after a few more casts, boom! A nice couple of runs, zzzzzz. It tool a few minutes to land this one.

We caught a few more little guys, when once again my boet went tight. This fella put up a nice fight and had a few telling runs in the shallows.

We headed a bit up river and tried some artificials. Not long and my brother got another vas. The guy was really putting me to shame as I was unable to land anything worth posting up to then. Caught on an olive minnow.

Finally I caught something... a Small leerie on a Pearl Watermelon, but anything on an artificial feels much more rewarding than a pull on bait.

As darkness descended, we change to some darker lures. Another kobbie landed.

Caught this little guy when it was almost completely dark. My retrieve wasn't even that slow, must've really wanted that minnow.

Another one on chokka. Great fun on the 6lbs (or 4lbs, not sure now) braid.

The next morning we fished for about 2 hours back towards the mouth. I got a couple of nice chaces from leeries, but failed to hook into one. My boet landed 3 more cob and some other little guys.

The elf were also thick, and some guys was smashing them on fly (i think) and spoons. Nothing big, but plentiful. We saw lots of grunters being caught on the boats as well as a couple of giant mullet. A giant diamond was also tugging a boat and angler around for while. All in all a good weekends light tackle fun.  Can't wait to get back there in two weeks!

We are heading down to Witsand this weekend again. Really want to catch some of these guys again...

I personally prefer a neap as it gives us longer time to fish a spot and there are less strong currents. Collecting bait is easier on a spring low and you do get access to spots you wouldn't normally, but we have caught plenty on spring and neap...

Great fish, well done.
Always awesome sport on that kind of light tackle.
Also great to see them swim away too after release.
