Leaving the hook in

Nice going:) the water is always ice there, even in January. If you fish barbless the hook should fall out. If not its a different story and will be stuck till it dissolves. Musselcrackers are tough, they chow urchins for breakfast, he should be ok

adam5016, it depends on where in the mouth the hook is situated. if it's not in the through then the fish should survive. Don't think the bandit hook is stainless steel so is will rust out and hopefully not injured the fish. Usually the fish gets rid of the hook in their own way....my 2c

well i've caught a few fish that fed with no problem with hooks in their mouths. Caught a speficic galjoen fat as can be with a 1/0 in the stomache when i cut it open.

Put it like this, it has a much better chance of survival than if it went into your fishing bag....

The hook was stuck just behind the top molars. Couldn't budge it without hurting it further. Don't get me wrong, I don't release everything I catch, but there are so few crackers left (always release them) and this was way undersize. Caught a nice bronze bream 2.2 kg - that went to the braai.

Cast just to the right of gully running into open sea. Near the futhest of those 3 rocks standing out of water. Usually stand on back rocks, but wind was coming from east so stood to the right on pick. Another guy also had a big pickup on crab, almost certainly a cracker, but lost it on the bricks. He looked pretty pissed!

i have caught plenty of snoek with hooks all over, from their mouths, body, throats to stomaches, i have even caught snoek with spinners hanging from their mouths, on numerous occasions, and they seem to do just fine...... you would not believe how the stomach acids disolve a big 12/o hook!!

i think a fish been foul hooked in the stomach is prob a lot worse than a fish actually swallowing the hook!

when i was tagging tuna in the indian ocean we were inserting electronic tags inside the fish with a sensor sticking out of the belly cavity, this was done by cutting the cavity open and then stitching closed again, and know that have had a few recaptures, the fish were also tagged with a red spagetti tag and a few of these fish have been recaptured without the electronic tag and only a scar, what apparently happens is that the fish developes a type of syst around the tag and then expels it and then heals up.....

I have caught and witnessed many deformed and badly injured fish been caught, i think they heal pretty well in  the wild!
