I've used 17kg, i've changed to 12kg but use 6oz and would need a leader line of +/-17kg. How long should leader line be?

Firstly:welcomesea:

It all depends on what you want to target lets say you want to target edible fish then a leader of between .80 and .90 will be fine if you want to go for sharks then a leader of 1mm up to 1.8mm will be good.

You cant use too light a leader as your mainline is normally between 13-20kg breaking strain, you need a thicker leader for that extra protection incase something decent picks you up and you fishing in a rough area, length wise if you fish for a club it can be no longer than 8-9m long if i'm not mistaken.

I normally double the length of my rod with a couple of turns on the reel.

Hope this helps

ja, double the rod length and 1 wind is normally safe. try working on line diameter, fishing with .50mm, you can use a .80 to .90 mm very comfortably for cob etc.what area do you fish?

Why do you guys use such think leader for edibles in capetown?

I use 0.60 for kob off the beach and 0.70 off the rocks...

Hi there troy, my mainline is .40-.45 i use a .50-.55 leaderline and i only make it the length of my rod and so 2turns on my spool. I cast a 5-8ounce on this setup and only target edibles and i have been using this for about 6years now and no problems yet. C u on tuesday by the meeting. We making some casts again before the meeting so bring youré setup and a bit of water for the duim brand. Lots of fun.

When you are ready to cast you should have 2-3 turns on your spool. Any more can hamper your casting.

In league angling your leader may not be longer than 9m from where your mainline ceases to be a single line(start of your knot) to the bottom of your lowest hook.

Depends on what you target, for eds on the beach my standard setup to target steenies and cobbies on chokka baits are 0.40mm main line, 0.60mm leader of 6m, I cast a 6oz lead for normal casts & a 7oz lead for far casts.

Fishing with live bait & for sharks the setup is heavier. At the rocks I also prefer to stepup on the line thickness, but my leader stays between 6 & 7 meter. :fishn
