Lb line vs max drag

Just bought a new Shimano spheros 8000 fb. Haven't filled it with line yet. Been looking at some deals when it struck me that this reel has a maximum drag of 27 lb. I was thinking of filling it with 50lb braid, but then wouldn't it be overkill as the maximum pressure on the line will roughly be 27lb. Am I missing something. If a fish pulls the line at 30 lb of force, line will be leaving your reel wouldn't it. So 40lb braid will be more than adequate? Mabe my physics brain haven't worked for a while and I missed like the most important factor that make my topic seems like a primary school question. Anyway, would love to hear what you think.

Also consider abrasion resistance. In reality we should be looking at diameter and not necessaries just break strength. Plus consider shock and drag!

The diameter issue is a good point. If I can get away with braid with a smaller diameter I can fit more line on my reel. With regards to shock, will my leader absorb most of it? So keeping in mind that I will be using my setup off a kayak, what diameter or breaking strain would you suggest for my reel?

and of course you will loose a little on the knots.

It all comes down to how much line is required?

Jerry Brown has a thicker diameter than whiplash thus you will have less line.

Jerry Brown seems to be able to handle more abrasion than whiplash because of its diameter.

I would go for 40lb Jerry Brown/Africast or 50lb whiplash.

Thanks splasher. Didn't take knots into consideration. A definite must when thinking about these things. Bottom line I suppose is that the max drag of the reel sort of give you an indication of the line strenght you would load on your reel give a few pound for abrasion, shock and knot strenght. Old news I suppose!

I had the same size spheros and it was loaded with 50lb whiplash... It was a perfect combination and I didnt have any abrasion issues with the braid... Actually no issues at all.. used it for trolling, jigging and bottom fishing
