Week before Easter I was working on a little dolly to launch my dinghy a little easier and I managed to get it done just in time.

Took the missus out on the first day to try and get a grunter, but it was raining the week before we got there and when the rivier comes down with fresh water it’s usually full of small kakkies and barbel. Stil a very nice day on the water to start off my ten day holiday and forget all about work ;)

By the time most of the beer was finished, I saw our plumber Daniel busy casting a net between the reeds so I went over to say hello and arrange a sunset session. I managed to get a couple of good pics of my dinghy with my missus.

Went to Groen Pampoen over sunset looking for kobbies, but I got nothing. Daniel managed to get a sand shark, but put it back before it was even properly out of the water…

Day 2 I went exploring in the river looking to see what bait can be found, and managed to arrange another sunset session with Daniel, but this time we went to skulpiesbaai. Everyone was throwing for elf, but I put some small hooks on try and get some fresh fillets before I throw for elf. I got this little stumpy straight away and then got a gorrie soon after.

We tried for elf for about 2 hours, one guy managed a small kobbie and I got a nice gully shark (65cm total length, 52 at the notch) with my 10ft dropshot rod on a chokka strip with a gorrie fillet tied over it. Lekke fight on the light setup!

So after day 2 I added 3 species to the list for the comp.

Next morning I was at groen pampoen again looking for a steenie with some salted bloodworm. When that didn’t work I tried a stumpy strip for kobbies, but nothing…

That night I went to the beach again looking for elf, but only managed another stumpy. We packed up as soon as we realized there is no elf.

Went out with the dinghy the next day looking for grunter and found a secret little bank that holds nice sized sand prawn… save these buggers in a bucket for an early morning preekstoel session and got some mudprawn to try get a grunter.

Anchored the dinghy on a good looking spot, put my mudprawns out on the pushing tide…

…but no grunter… Instead I’m rewarded with a slimy barbel and another gorrie. Well, maybe the 47cm barbell will count as another specie, got the pic anyways, just in case, lol

I anchored on a good looking bank and found myself on top of a school of undersize steenies. These things grabbed the prawns without remorse and took off like rockets! They kept me so busy I didn’t even have time to drink my beer!

I probably landed like 7 of them all in the 40cm range (All of them went back). Biggest one was 44cm, but it probably won’t count towards the compo since MCM rules apply.

Sun went down and it was time to head home and braai some chops, again! Been there almost a week and still haven’t caught a decent sized ed…

Just look at that sunset as I packed up!

Next day the missus and I decided to take a hike between Jongensfontein and Stilbaai. We probably walked about 3km one way, stopping everywhere where the water looked nice.

This is one of my favourite gallie spots! It’s got a livewell to keep your fish in, then you choose the biggest one from the pool at the end of the day for the braai…

We were harassed by small kakkies everywhere, but a couple of stops further I got a nice pickup on the light setup (10ft dropshot rod with 20lb braid) and landed this fat wildeperd!

He measured 44cm on the tape and I got another specie on the list!
(Looks a bit shorter in the pic, but he was flappen like a mother so this is the best pic I could get)
