I am selling my 2 stealth kayaks on trailer(registered) for R5000. I now want to buy a kaskazi Dorado. Do you have any opinions about this kayak? I will be looking at fishing mostly Simons Town , buffels etc. Your responses will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Grootvis,
I'm just wondering what the reasons are behind you specifically looking at a Dorado? Firstly there's are differences between the D1 and D2. i understand that with the D2 at least you can get a full size rod in.
If you are looking for a performancy type ski, why not look at stealth ProFisha? It is lighter, narrower, sleeker and would perform better. All that anchor-trolley rigging on the Kaskazi is clutter and in the way. A big issue for me is also the position of the rudder on the Dorrie, and the effect on its performance: stuck out on the end like an after-thought, as soon as a wave starts picking the stern up and drops the nose, the rudder is out of the water = loss of steerage followed by a quick broach and hello swimming. Compared to ProFisha's surfski type rudder which being forward maintains better contact with the water and makes the ski really very maneuverable.

Like i said, i dont know enough about what you want in in ski to really comment, and dont want to start a whole brand-war, mine's better type debate, but there are better performance type skis than the Dorado.

Let us know what transpires and how it works out. regards

You cannot go wrong with the kaskazi Dorados... I had the DII and miss her everyday.

I owned stealths, Pinnacles and the Kas D2. Bulk Carrier even had 2. (slight Redesign on the fish box on the 2nd one)

Easy to paddle, more than enough hatch space. (the second port makes it a breeze to clean and unpack), very stable due to the low center of gravity.(I used mine some serious swell and surf) anchor guides are great additions.

the only down side i would say is that they are a bit heavy.(being 4.8m long) and i suggest you put in Bung drain holes in the fish hatch. (Arthur might have already started doing this)

Cant go wrong with them. A people who down play them.. have never paddled or fished off them.

Thanks for the info, I must admit, I have always seen them as superior build to the stealth etc kayaks out there. I like the design and layout of the kayak too. I just could never afford one as i had to get 2 ( one for the wife too) but now that kids have come along etc, she no longer will be able too, which now gives me the opportunity to sell both the stealths and get the kaskazi D2 or D1 if available. I intend to go look at paddlers when im in Cape town and see what there is too offer. I am prepared though to look at the stealths or any others that there are, but you know how it goes, once you have your mind set, it stays set!

Ja I owned a few as well and everyone had a few good designs ideas I liked and the ideal kayak would be a mixture of a few of them.

Problem is everytime I had to pick up one to go fishing I took my D2.

And at that stage I could choose between the D2, old pinnacle, pinnacle elite and the supalite.

My second one was made with a bigger hatch about the size of the supalite. Loved that from the stealths but D2 have ample space for the normal fisher.

Ek het ook Dorado gehad. Verruil vir Hobie oor ek plat water vang. Kyk na my metode van kayak oplaai. Dan maak die gewig geen saak nie. In die water maak gewig ook geen verskil nie. Lengte gee spoed. Die Dorado loop fantasties in die see.

Kyk na die blad.

I agree with TFM, you have to paddle one to know you like it, I have heard a lot of comment about all kayaks and have been wanting one for a long time took me about 2years to find one on gumtree. Just shows after you paddled one you will never want to get rid of it.

Still not happy that I sold mine. Just had too many things that float at my house. Had to choose.

Still get the urge to go kayak fishing. Even kept my carbon fiber paddle to in-case I ever decide to get one again.

Morning Grootvis,

A story... My uncle (73 years old) has been driving beach buggies since I can remember and there's absolutely no way he would consider anything else... I think he's owned 7 or 8 to date and rebuilt even more... The point is, if you like something, then you like it, no matter what the pro's and con's... Simple as that.

There have been numerous discussions on Sealine about every possible facet of almost all the brands of skis/kayaks avaliable in the market place today and as yet, a consensus has not been reached...

At my factory we have a small side-line business that repairs skis/kayaks and I have seen and heard it all, not one craft is perfect, not even mine... lol. I have yet to meet a fisherman that is 100% completely happy with his craft...

There are going to be skis/kayaks that are faster, sleeker, more of this, less of that, bigger this, smaller that, etc. it's just how it is...

The Kaskazi Dorado is an excellent craft, the build quality is superb and in the overall scheme of things, one of the better crafts out there...
