Looking forward to hearing how the windsong performs at Mazeppa Bay Trevour, good luck hope the fish are on the bite for you.

Matt, sounds like you're on a winner with the Pauls kite. When are you taking the maiden flight?

Cheers,
Simon

He he I was testing flying it while you wrote that :)

The Flexiwing is definitely very stable, and is hard to upset. I had a play with tacking by adding weight (clothes pegs!) to the tip of one wing. The wind was variable and only around 5-10 knots but it was pulling hard enough to fish (I think!). Even when the wind died or when line was being let out quickly it just floated in a stable manner.
I was using my trusty Avet SX loaded with 50lb Fins braid but I think a larger lever drag reel with something heavier like 80lb would be better. Cranking power on the little Avet is great though. A lever drag would be the way to go as the gears only take weight when winding in, when just sitting there it's the drag and anti reverse dogs taking the strain.

Tacking pegs :) I didn't get a chance to try the increased drag method although the pegs would do that somewhat.

Here's the kite with the Skyhook attached. I'll need some more practice with the this.

I haven't flown a kite since I was a kid - I doubt I'm going to reach the point where I'm trying tricks and experiments on a two week holiday. You never know, I've thought about a kite while fishing at the venue I'm going to, and 30 degrees of tack would go along way with the predominent winds. I can see the arguments on the rocks and the gillie pulling the seawrecked kite out by hand.

Fixing the ferri kite 2m from the main kite should be simple enough, and lodgic says it should assist tack, or at least be able to deliver a bait in lighter winds? Stability?

I had another play with the Flexiwing kite today. I have hooked it up to a Penn Squall 40 Lever drag with approx. 6-700 metres of 60 lb braid.
I went out to have another go at tacking the kite, by attaching some drag to one wingtip at a time in the form of a part of a plastic bag. Without going to extremes, I was getting 45 degrees either side of downwind, without using weights or the Skyhook.
The next thing to try will be some weight on the wingtip along with some more drag, or maybe playing with the bridling on the drogue.
The wind today was around the 15 knot mark, and the the kite is definitely capable of taking much more.

SB

I managed to get out today to start trying rigs on the new kite. It was a little daunting trying to work out how to rig everything, but with the loads of information on the PFK site, I rigged up a Halco Rooster Popper (Australian company) on the kite, behind a weighted float, as I was fishing over a section of reef. The wind was almost directly offshore at up to 25 knots, so the kite was depowered from it's standard setting and sent out. Despite the float bottle weighing around 1kg it spent a lot of it's time in the air, I'll have to get a bigger bottle for stronger winds.
no fish were caught despite sending the rig out around 700 metres a couple of times. Next option will be to use a floating/diving lure so that it can be slowly moved over the reef and then moved faster so that it dives.
I can't wait until the bait ferry gets here :)
Pic of the Squall 40 which is working well with this kite.

Hey boet that kite in strong wind can pull like a mother use a 2 litre bottle and fill it so that when you hold the mainline and let the kite go it just barely picks the bottle from the surface;)

Thanks Doc Hoosen. I think a 2 litre bottle would have been about perfect on the day instead of the 1 litre bottle I was using.
I did head out on another day to fish the Murray River Mouth but the height of the tide and wind direction prevented it, although the forecast had been favourable. I did however cast a few baits with my eldest lad and we picked up a crab and a cute little elephant shark which he was pretty excited about :)
