Jigging for yellowfin

The shoal size yellowfin have started to make a comeback in the PE area.I have caught them on the troll but know I would like to target them on jigs.I would like to ask for some input on the following.1 what is the deepest one should be prepared to let your jig down.2 what is the better jig shape to use ie shimano butterfly, sevenseas hooker or the longer jigs like willimson benthos and abys jigs. When using these jigs what speed of retrieve is recomended.3 Lastly what would be the favoured strenth braid.I would be happy for any thoughts from all you western cape pros out there and anyone els who can help.thanxs crackerkid

Heihachi - far from Pro mate, but I do love the game... :)

Cracker - Mate I can only offer a little advice in this area as I haven't had enough shots on YFT with jigs... I can say a couple things which seem to be th trend in YFT jigging... here in the Cape, whats worked, as well as Internationally...

YFT to to eat smaller, flutter style jigs far more often than long spear jigs.... most guys are using flutter style jigs like Hooker1, our TW Slayers, and a couple other exotics like FLABo's and such.....

Unlike Yellowtail, AJ's and such which seem to prefer the faster slimmer jigs, tuna jiggers have more sucess on the flutters, worked slower and often even in a yo-yo motion, although slow medium mechanical jigging seems the way to go.

Depth... you need to get to the fish... Are you marking these schools? If so, I would guess 10 to 15 metres below the depth they are. Tuna will hit these flutters jigs on the drop, so be prepared for that.

What size are the fish? I think as Tuna are not fish to take you into the bricks, capacity is more important than strength or abrasion resistant... I would spool PE 4 to PE 6 line. That should range between 40lb and 60lb breaking strain.

Of course there are exceptions to every rule, so if one thing doesn't work, try another. What are the fish feeding on? Might be worth trying to match that either in size or shape.... natural colours probably best, or something similar to what troll colours work.

Sorry I can't be of more help mate, lets here back how it goes.

I've caught Yellowfin on my casting rod with a slim fast retrieve spinner. I just wait till they are hitting the bait then cast my spinner, let is sink, and retrieve fast.

Only thing is, your arms feel like jelly after an hour of pulling with an unsuitable rod and no harness............not a good idea, believe me!

Its more fun on a surface plug though, lots of action and if you're lucky jumping fish, but same as before, you k--k off when the beast sticks to your hooks and you are using a 10ft fast action rod that you need to cast well with.

Although I am not anywhere near as experienced as Nepps, I do spend a fair amount of time chewing the cud in tackle shops all around the world with some well seasoned jiggers. The advice he gave on the small flutter type jigs and the slow jigging action has been the same advice all of them have offered. I hope that my time spent butt sniffing will be of benefit to you out on the high seas. Good luck and send us the photos!
