Hi guys, I am busy doing a study comparing 3 different Tilapia species in Stellenbosch. I have heard about Israeli/Blue Tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) in the area, Does any one know where I can get hold of some, or a farm dam which holds them? Cheers, Scott

Hi there,

Try Eikendal the Winefarm outside of Stellenbosch, they have two dams and I know the bottom dam and top dam has a large population, dont know the species, but speak to the guys running the fishing shop on the farm, I am sure they might be able to tell you what they are and even cathc a few.

Other option are Le Bonheur the Croc Farm close to Franschoek and Techno Park outside Stellenbosch. Once again know they are there, just dont know the differences between the species.

Good luck

Another option that wont cost you money but is pretty sif, is try the liesbeeck river and the other river running parralel to the M5.

That river has Tons of Tilapia and Carp in. Just wear gloves:?

stinkmossel will be able to help you out, he catches plenty! What other species are there? O. mossambicus and perhaps T. sparmanii?

Thanks for all the the Info guys, I really appreciate it!

Ulrich84 I will definitely go past Eikendal and find out. The dam at Technopark, do you know if it is on that side of the property or on the De Zalze winefarm? I think I will rather avoid the liesbeek, might end up being outlived by the fish I catch!
:headb

Thanks aquadementia, I am running a growth comparison trial between the Israeli (Oreochromis aureus) the Nile (O. niloticus) and the Mozambique (O. mossambicus).

I had a look on Google Earth now, and saw the dams on technopark. I will go and have a look and find out if I can get some. Thanks!

I know it doesn't have Israeli kurper, Eli wanted a venue where he can catch Kurper

Eli: yes its a catch and release venue, except for the Barbel you give them to the workers there!

There's 4 dams all with the mentioned species in, the top one next to the waterfall has plenty Kurper, below the waterfall barbel and Bass and lower down more big Carp and kurper too. Floaties with white plain dough backing nails the kurpers.

Scott what is the research for ? Do you want to take fish out of dams or net and study growth of fish in dams . I have all three species but it all depends what you want to do with the fish . Also got access to a breeding pond of Pseudocrenilabrus philander.

Howzit guys, I did go and speak to them at Eikendal, and they say that they do have them in the dam, but with trout in there as well, netting at this time of the year would be a problem. I had a look at technopark as well. In the mean time, some Oreochromis andersonii or 3 spot tilapia became available as they were spawning flat out in our tanks. So what I did was substitute the israeli for the 3 spots in my trial, as it would speed up the process and the 3 spot is also well used in aquaculture. My study is now a growth comparison between the Nile, Mozambique and 3 spot in an aquaculture system called biofloc. I will run it in 250l tanks here on the university farm, so not in dams. The fish which I was wanting to catch would need to be used to spawn the 500 fingerlings that I would use in the trial. So about a month ago I managed to spawn the mozambique and the 3 spots and have got enough of them, the Nile I will most likely be importing from Thailand in the coming month or so.

Thanks for all the help and advise guys, I really appreciate it, and it made for some interesting reading!
