I'm going to  fish at a private dam this vacation that I fished before. The average fish I catch there is 1kg plus and I have heard from other peolpe that they have caught 4kg+. My question is, what lures  and techniques would you use to get the bigger fish? What size lures would you use for the bigger ones?

This is one of the smaller fish I caught there

Pipeman, its a lekke feeling to know youre going on holiday! Its a tricky qeustion, cause you have to keep all the conditions in mind!

Try to see if you could see small fry close to the bank, any small tilapia, baby bass, and try to match the seizes, depending on the tipe of stucture in the dam,you can maybee fish with a crankbait maybe a perch, baby bass, firetiger, bluegill colours,IF there isnt any grass, youll get hung up on!

Anoter option is a texas rigged fluke, works wonders in open waters, just let it sink give it a twitch now and agian,a nother good bait is a spinnerbait, white, yellow, natural with gold or silwer willow leaf blades, one tip(THE BIGGER THE BETTER) 1/2oz nothing smaller!

Try and target stucture, remember the big ones always sits in the best spot in the house, they boellie the smaller ones out, right next to the bank or at the end of a piece of timber closer to deep water!Rather try to get early to the water fish the morning session till about 10 a clock, spend the rest of the day with the wife and kids and go back to fish at 14:30 till dark!Ejoy it,hope you can use some of this!

Thanks MAN! I use most of these techniques! The problem is the fish in the are very aggressive and I'm almost the only person fishing this water. The smaller ones smack these normal size lures! I use superflukes, brushhogs and stickworms and they are all quite big , but the smaller fish keep on getting to these baits first! I have tried Spinnerbaits, but they also don't get past these smaller fish! What do you think should I try?

HI Pipeman.

Firstly where do you fish these waters.

Is it in the lowveld or up on the highveld? Which area?

Play with colours on your plastics - this is an easy way to start.

Size - go big if you still getting small ones try going small some of the bigger bass can be very finicty. You may also have to use lighter line/leader

Try rigging your lures differently - mojo/texas carolina weightless.

Just fished Goedetrouw on the weekend - 90% of the big bass (3kg+) came out on 6lb line and very small crankbaits.

Lot's of people are scared to use surface lures - Man will tell you as well as many of the others that fish for bass on a regular basis that surface lures produce big fish. Condtions need to be right for surface and they give you a very small window time in which to fish them properly. Almost dark in the late evenin with a chop on the water = Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeg  BASS ask Man he got a 5.09 on a suface lure - not many of us will ever see a bass that size let alone catch one.

Last resort - take me with you...........................Just kidding - I like fishng new water all the time.......

Hope this helps somewhat.....................

Boet I think you must be confused - are you not refering to a buzz bait?

To the best of my knowledge a chatter bait is a sub surface lure.

A buzz bait however is a surface spinnerbait?

Buzzbait = Surface lure

CHatterbait = NOT surface lure

Maybe you could post us a pic of your chatterbait please Rapala before you really confushoius all of us for clarity.

Maybe the green thong is pressing on the brain a lil.........:temp:

Mate, maybe you should try and use your chatterbait differently? I use them and they hardly come up from the surface.

I am Afrikaans, so let me just make sure we understand each other, surface means bodem? Am i right? Op die vloer van die dam?

Are we talking about the same thing? Does surface bait mean ontop of water or on floor of dam?

:doh

Maybe you got confused with chatterbait and super fluke?

Surface Lure - Bo die water op die oppervlak.

Sub Surface - Onder die water tussen die boddem en die oppervlak

Bottom - op die vloer van die water.

Thanks for your clarification Raggieman

Unless you fish a chatter bait at MACH 1 there is no way to fish it as a surface lure unless you tie a beeeg "Dobber" to it

Reference to your Super Fluke comment - We are not discussing plastic lures :eek:tp::here so me believes that that thong is pressin down a bit hard on the ol brain there Rapala. One phrase come to mind "Dazed and confused":rasta

Maybe you got too many :shade1s in the green Thong.........................

Me thinks your english is very delicous and now that we have clarified that your chatterbait is not a Surface lure we can move on. Nothing to stop you writing the taal either as I think the vast majority of us will be able to follow your comments.

Pipeman I hopes you are still with us bru.

Pipeman, ryan and me got some nice fish on the top water lures! Its worth trying,if you can get a big one 11cm(isnt to big)

You get some of them in the saltwater section,blue-chrome,black-gold is HOT colors, make a hell of a niose, the smaller fish will get intimmedated by the bait while the old ballies will get HUNGRY!!!!!!

Raps you must get a grip mate, have a kit kat and now and then put a tight on instead of that dangerous thing,do you wash it,or do you just shower with it to?(it doesnt count a)

Ryan dont you have any picks of Goedetrouw?

What I can show you is the first officially recorded  picture of a Nembwe caught in Southg Africa. They normally only occur north of the zambezi and in the Okavango Delta.

Wish I had some of these snake lures for the dam I'm fishing in! I have seen lot of snakes swimming on top of the water there! Think it would work like a charm! If somebody has some I will a few from you! Or if somebody has seen something similar let me know please!

I understand now thanx, we misunderstood each other i recon.

Any language you like it i am still your father and you will respect me!

I have never had to much like in surface baits to be honest, i normally use rapala's that break the surface of the water and dive about 15 cm deep. Had plenty success that way.

Anyways, will post some pictures on Monday if i have any luck this weekend. Might settle on Bronkorspruit dam...not too sure and weather might change.

I really need a private dam less than 120km away from me. A place where i can slip away too if the lady decides to go shopping.....u know?

I feel kinda flu struck so talk later.....

Did you not pm me earlier?

Just joking Ryan, i'm not really your father mate.

They advertised some really nice plastic snakes some time ago on one of these professional fishing dvd's, i have to admit that those snakes were about 15 - 20 cm in length.

Anyways, talk to you oaks soon, i really feel flu beaten.

I really hope that i have some success over the weeken so that i can post some nice pic's here. I would love to catch a big bass about 4,5kg and larger in size, it will be a first for me too.

Cheerz and God Bless

Jacques
