I went back on the forum as far as I can, read almost all the posts.

This is what I would like to know. How much have your tactics, bait, gear, how you approach a session and your views changed over the years?

This isn't to get advice, just to have a chat since it is very dead on this forum!

Times are tough and fishing has become a expensive luxury over the last 5 years.My fishing has gone down from avg 20 sessions a year to maybe 3.....so depressing.

Yes time is though indeed.

I haven't been fishing a long time, less than a year. But from starting out to now I have stopped buying ready tide rigs in the first 6 months and started making my own.

Since I relocated to the Middle East 2 years back I haven't done any carp angling at all. However in the 3 years before that my approach didn't change in any dramatic ways, more just little subtle changes that I'd like to think were improvements based on gaining more experience and learning from other anglers along the way.

Good on you that you're tying your own rigs, I'm not sure it's more cost effective 'cause it can get quite addictive and you might end up buying a lot more items than you really need (kind of like all tackle), but it's a good way to increase your skills and overall angling results.

Not really sure how long I have been doing this now, had a break for 3-4 years.

Biggest lesson I learnt = FIND THE FISH FIRST, this took me my PB to realise I have been doing it wrong for a long long time.

Bait = I use more now, I make my own bait so it costs me very little to make, although being sensible about it is better than just dumping it into a place. All bait has its place in fishing, a bait in the right place will catch no matter what it is.

Rigs= I only fish 3 rigs, fluro stiff rig, zig rig or a small chod rig (2-3cm max).

Tackle = Over time you learn what is really essential, I tend to carry less equipment now, also makes it easy to move If possible.

Started growing my own tigers. Very hard to get here in Australia and risky and expensive to import so I'm taking matters into my own hands.
Ditto on what was said on finding them first.
Scaled down gear, small to medium lakes I use my 10ft Scope rods. The barrow is always packed and ready to load in the garage. Work is tough and time is a luxury, if I get a moment to go fishing I can be on the road in an hour.
Mostly do overnighters now, too many other important things to take care of during the day, work family and home maintenance.
If friends are going fishing I will make time for it. We catch up seldom enough as it is.
I've only been doing it 4 years but it changes all the time as you learn what works well where & when.

Yes, I have also learned that if you want to know something, rather ask here than in the tackle shops. Also learned to make friends here and want to say a special thanks to Bassbro for all his help and friendship.

Wow - 4-5 years:

Refined rigs without the complications & clutter of constant changing. Evolve yes but keep it easy for yourself.

Bait: Presentation, bait placement & quality baits with added enhancers does it for me.

Lastly fish hard every session - think constantly

I keep my fishing circle small, don't easily share info or venues with people I don't know personally, fish only wild venues, scaled down on what I buy, keeping it simple with rigs etc.
