I was privileged to be taken out deep sea fishing by my neighbour Stephan Van Der Merwe (big van)off Richards Bay. Stephan (skipper), Pieter, Martilie and I set off at 5h00. We trawled at Drukgang for about 3 hours without any luck. We decided to move shallower towards the 200m mark. This was a great decision by Stephan as we got a strike within 20 minutes. We were on.

I would like to thank Stephan (Big Van) who helped me achieve one of my bucket list items. You are a great skipper and coach, had a lot of patients with me and helped all the way.

Dankie Stephan

Bruce congrats again on your first marlin. The photos on your GOPRO is better than mine on the camera.

Shaggy I was in two minds if it was a stripey or blue. I agree that it is a blue after lots of speculation. Frans of the boat Trinity also said that it confuses him a bit but that it looks more like a blue. He mentioned that a stripey has more a flat head like a bull-dorado. This is the first marlin I hooked with the Pakula-shackle hookset. The front hook protruded the top of the head from the inside and the other had swinged around and was embedded on the top of the bill. It would never came off. The fish was very well behaved. I've leadered it in slowly with soft hands and then grabbed the bill. She never tried pulling me over. I removed the hooks by hand and she revived very well. She actually jumped out of my hands with a cheerful glee. A face you will never forget.

Lets catch more!!
