When this came out the 30000 drag was still unknown

People are trying to go smaller not bigger. Buying 8000 size reels and adding bigger spools etc. Wonder if there really is a market for such a big reel? I know the Americans like fishing for big sharks with grinders, so maybe there. As it is a 20k reel is already heavy!

Very well put Bennie....

Something that needs to be expressed to all those folks going the 8000/10000 size route, then upgrading their reel with larger spools and using them in place of 18000/20000 size reels is that the original 8000/10000 size models were never designed to fish at such extreme drag pressures, and by adding a larger spool and then fishing the reel at above average drag settings runs the risk of damage to the internals and gearings etc on the reel itself...

So while these spools do add the incredible advantage of increased line capacity, and this advantage is HUGE in my opinion, far bigger than the increased drag power, one must be careful not to try fish the reels above their factory specs if possible.... Granted the factory specs on high end spinners like Stellas are still huge, so fishing 10 to 12 kilos of drag on a 8000/10000 size reel is no problem, pushing these smaller models up above the 15 kilo mark "because the spool says it can handle it" is not wise practice, and for the most part unnecessary.... at those crazy settings ( 18 to 22 kilos ) you are asking for breakages, either internals on the reel, or terminal gear/knots etc....

Better technique would be to rely on your reel to the 10 to 12 kilo drag mark ( which is ALOT ) and then your hand to palm the spool after that if you need it...

The 30000 Stella I am sure is aimed at those guys fishing off long range vessels for Cow Yellowfin Tuna, and maybe the Bluefin boys too... that being said, Paul from Saltywater landed a 406lb Bluefin on popping gear this week using an 18000 Stella and prototype Carpenter popping rod... so I would imagine the 30000 is to be aimed at the guys fishing off those large long range boats where following the fish is not an option... somewhere like that when you need 500 metres plus of 80lb braid or similar I would imagine...

It would be an absolute donkey to jig with a 30000... Serious Gym time needed before one gives that a try!!!

when the reel comes out the market will create itself bigger tuna size billfish on pitchbait it opens a lot of different possible techniques.

the 8 and 10k stellas are awesome but you have to keep in mind that they use single stack drags while the 18 & 20 use dual stacks, the spec sheets say that all the stellas have more or less the same drag power but you have to keep in mind that the bigger reels can sustain that drag setting for much longer.

Antjar I agree, but casting that monster may be an issue... perhaps with an aquacat.. but then again whats the point of using a spinning reel if using a bait boat

aqua its 30oz which is lighter than a tourim 50 and we south african's can cast it so, the stella is going to be the tor50 of grinders

I think I need to see one in the flesh as you are right its going to be a monster. What would an alternative be? maybe a 20 000 with a 25 000 JM spool for some extra cap? either way its big bucks for a bronzie reel lol

Growing up in JHB using Grinders I just like the feel of a grinder for some weird reason apart from the casting.

I think the 30000 is made more with the American market in mind for the BFT etc.... taking a R13-15 000 reel down to play with bronzies etc is not really realistic if you have any sense!!!
But i guess boys will be boys and someone will give it a bash!:ssswim:

the stella can take 900m of .41mm so just think if you use whiplash as backing and a casting braid on top, should be well over 1000m of line
