I got this pic from a mate in Zim. Apparently this one was caught in a net of some sorts. Bloody huge and probably would have put up a massive fight.

Yep that is a golith tiger from the congo.

We used to have a game on the zambezi when I worked up there and when one was quite warm on a few drinks.

Tigerfish ROulette:

The object of the game was to swim 100m in the zambezi with no kit on and bit of tinfoil attached to mr Johnson with an elastic band - I always chickened out...........LOL

Dont blame you... the tackle is worth a lot and cant be replaced. I suppose if the tiger doesnt get you the crocks will.

Will try and do a trip up there in the future (if there is anything left in Zim) as my mate is still living there and has the boats etc for a trip.

Me too. Will be at Shackletons from 1-4. Then Chirundu 19-22 Aug. Kariba can still be good if you can get fuel.

This is from nowhere Zimbabwe...and it's been featured on this site before and elsewhere on the www. (search for goliath tiger). The very same pics in fact :)

This is a Hydrocynus goliath of average size. A species endemic of the Congo drainage system.....also in L Tanganyika. Occurs no where near the Zambezi system, and is also absent from Lakes Mweru and Bangweulu in the "Zambian" Congo system, but is recorded from Lake Upemba on the Upper Lualaba in Katanga. the largest specimens are known from the Lower Congo along the 'Cuvette Centrale'.

I am reliably informed that this specimen was caught by locals on the Kwango river

beautiful fish of note :)

I have been planning a trip to find those goliath tigers next year- not an easy one without local knowledge (or even country knowledge). I managed to find one site where an operator was asking Euro 8000 for 10 days - excluding flights to Kinshasa - a but steep I thought

If you have any ideas where i could find information on the rivers you mentioned - and possible locations - please let me know

ziggy, give the guys at Frontier Flyfishing a shout in JNB. One of the guides (Francois) is doing a trip later this year. First time so it will be exploratory, but if it is worth it then it should pave the way for future trips.
