Hey Rimos,

I just put on my gloves but I can't see where we disagree. The qouta system allocation in the cape is lopsided in favour of the big co. and in no way do I endorse or support it.

My point was that the trawlers were not responsible for the no show off sardines and that the quota's placed on the trawlers will ensure that.

Gloves taken off.

Sorry boet i didnt mean to come on so strong it's just my way i guess.I do respect everyones opinions and i feel that is what sealine is all about expresing ones thoughts and opinions. The only thing is that the article Mel posted and it's origion need to think twice before saying such things without and solid justification.

If you recall a few weeks ago we had an issue regarding the dejawing of a shark and i was guilty of judging the angler before i knew all the facts.I went and acted on impulse of what i heard from someone else on the site and after getting the full report i had to appologise for my hasty remarks.

This is why i now think very carefully before handing down the death sentence to anyone.

No hard feelings..

Cheers Riymos

A factor that I believe does directly affect the sardine run is water temperature and that is where we may come short again this year. Apparently a warm, wet winter is forecast for us. We need 18 degree C water inshore for the sards to get close to the beaches, otherwise they stay out deep.

Hey guys, it looks like i stirred up a bit of a hornets nest here, so i'm sorry if anyone was offended by the article that i placed, i had a feeling that it would, but the reason i posted it was, the fact that this is a angling forum, where we can all get our views/opinions thrashed out, and also to get some justification for them, to know exactly where we stand...Its an excellant form of education, so that when we are in general discussion with anyone at a later stage, we are so much more educated, and add so much more fact/substance to a conversation topic. As an example with this thread, we have so many views and so many facts that we can make reference to at a later stage...So that was the purpose of posting the article, so we can thouroughly dissect the information together, and make informed decisions independantly... I thank you guys for your responses, and i now know for sure where i stand on the above matter....So keep the opinions coming for all the topics, in that way we will be inadvertantly educating everone... Thanks

Hi Mel

I really dont think anyone took anything personel...as I said in my previous post this where this forum differs from others. The article provided the start for a view.We all committed  to conservation and every little bit of Education helps...the bit about Peru from Neptunes Contribution was something new to me..so we read and learn.

You know the one real thing I appreciate about the members of this Community is their vigour and dedication to fruitful debate.

Its takes time and effort to put down thoughts on the page ( especially if you are like me and type with one hand)......I know we have been criticised by other forums for not having a huge amount of fishing knowledge...but I don't think anyone can take way the spirit that is around..whether on a article like this 0R helping someone to feel at home.

I think well done to all members who contribute and continue s to educating and informing.

I agree with Neptune. Has nobody here heard of Namibia's huge sardine stock? That's right, because it too collapsed. Anyone heard that the West Coast sardine fishery did not produce this year? There is cause for concern here.

During my youth I packed shelves at P&P for pocket money. Amazing too see how much waste there was of fish.

Apparently certain types of fishing (ie shrimp) have up to 70% bycatch rates - the bycatch being shifted, dead, back into the sea due o licensing restrictions.

Society in general is anti-hunting/killing anything yet fails to see how their need for Omega-3 oils and brainfood (fish) results in unethical forms of fishing and the destruction of their much loved environment.

Solution:  BAN all commercial fishing! Let every f$%&er that want fish catch it off a kayak, from shore or with a speargun(the most ecologically sustainable form of fishing).::H

Hey guys.

It's me Ronald, the Sensational Journalist that posts articles without proper knowledge.

I do apologise to all Sealine members for my article making it's way to you. Unfortunately it was not my doing. I had no intention for my article to cause such a stir as Riymos said: "The only thing is that the article Mel posted and it's origion need to think twice before saying such things without and solid justification."

However, I must say that Mel forgot to add in the last paragraph of my article which read: "Anyone with any information on who to contact about this, or information on just exactly what is going on down in Mossel Bay, please contact us at: webmaster@kznfishing.co.za"

As you can see, I received a call from a concerned Ex-KZN resident, he told me about the trawlers, I merely posted the article, so that we could find out more information on the subject, Mind you the trawlers operating in Mossel Bay are a new occurance to the normal fishing activities that occur in the Cape, so yes this is a different scenario as to the normal trawling, and more importantly, the opening of the New Canning Plants, should be of concern, as that could lead to larger numbers than before being netted.

Once again, my apologies for the article being posted here.

Kind Regards

Ronald.

Hi Ronald, sorry for not posting your contact details, cos i didnt  think it would be ethical for me to do so, i just thought that by posting your article on Sealine, that the subject could get more responses and opinions, which it did, as you can see from the number of replies to the thread... Also, opinions are promoted on forums, and all relevant opinions are taken into account for individuals to make up their own minds, its a process of education, that is promoted...

I once again apologise for not including your contact details, and i hope that the posting of your article is taken in a postive light, to promote an ethos of expressing opinions and thus educating the public.

Hi Mel.

It's fine, but I think you missing the point, it wasn't my contact details that were important, it was the fact that I asked people with more information on the subject to help shed some light on the subject. That was the important part that you missed out.

It's cool though Mel.

Ronald.

Hello Ronald

Well I for one am glad that Mel has posted this topic as it encouraged alot of response and points of views on the subject.

If you read the artical you will find that it mainly states your point of view on this topic. You asked Does this mean the end of the sardine run and it  goes on to say that you got of the phone with Jerry who may have just explained why.Does just not then say that these were your feelings about the whole no show of the sardines.

I in no way mean to sound argumentitive but if you ask for more details on the subject should'nt you then take a neutral stance on situations reagrding this sort of thing? The article clearly state what was said and the reply's given by our members on sealine were inline with what was written by yourself, and thus i feel it unimportant to have stated that you required further info, because if you did require further info you would have kept the response a mere opinionated one.Which you can see it was'nt by your implications that this could be the last of the sardines..

From reading this article i think i am correct in saying that you agreed with this call that you recieved from Jerry regarding this issue,So why then ask for more info if you had already decided that the trawlers were going to net all the sardines that were meant for Durban.

I think Ronald that when posting sensitive issues like this you should take a litlle more time in deciding who is wrong and who is right.I enjoy stimulated conversation but also i said i now always think before i act and say anything.

Cheers Riymos

Hi Guys

In any vibrant debate the opponents normally debate the issue and NOT the person.I learnt this at an early age when I part of Negoiating teams in the Unions and later as part Political Groupings.

If one member starts a post comenting that it far better to catch Shad with a spoon than sardine bait...then as members of this forum we respect his view and then debate the issues with fact and experience. There is really no need for the person that made such a comment to have EMPERICAL evidence.

The situation with the sardine show is no different.Mel posted a observation and we all debated the pros/cons. To my knowdegde it lead to one of the best discussions we have on the forum. There is absolutely no reason for any DISCUSSION TO BECOME PERSONAL.

Guys ,,,we need to be a bit more accomdating and open to all views

Just my thought on the subject,

Rdgs

Hi Jace

Im sorry if i made it sound a bit personal,i did not intend for it to be a personal thing.I was just tryig to state the obvious. In Ronalds reply he made mention that Mel had forgot to mention the last paragraph in his post, which is why i thought i would make mention that in his whole post he stressed the fact or facts that it was his opinion, which in turn led me to believe he had already made up his mind that the trawlers were the cause of the no show.

I really do agree with you that this was one of the better debates that we had and Mel was totally correct in putting this post up,although we should thank Ronald for the original effort in thinking of posting such a topic..Ronald i have nothing agaisnt you boet hope you understand where im coming from.I am always up for a good debate and never turn one down lol lol so please don't take this the wrong way.I am meerly trying to correct the wrong so to say..

Cheers Riymos

Ps.Jace it may not be my place to correct anyone but as you aid each member has the right o his or her opinion. So thats all i was doing is defending my opinion and if it offende anyone then yeah im sorry..

Precisely. Unfortunately, marine fisheries management can never be an exact science. Does anyone honestly believe that if the Namibians, South Americans etc. had any idea that they were on the brink of disaster they would continue to harvest their stock? It would certainly be within the bounds of reason to suspect that MCM doesn't know their front from their rear in this regard. It seems to me that science has failed us in predicting our effect on fisheries in the past. I rather place my faith in the fact that history repeats itself.
