Hi Nemisis , Pm Whaler ..for upgrades etc !!!

Personally a few years ago ,i saw a Saltist 50 that was powder coated - External ..Damn it looked Awesome , I think you wud need to strip all the internals ..+ cover all important parts etc etc .

May be if some one here can shed some light on how powder coating is done !!!

Cheers ..

Gud luck & keep us posted !!!

it is hell of a cheap costs about R9 per kg! It is put in a bath of some liquid that makes +ve charged things stick to it( the paint powder has a positive charge) once it sticks on to the surface it is then baked at abt 160 degrees whish melts the powder and bonds to the metal surface! it is very strong and can take alot of beating around!! NOT EXACTLY HOW IT IS DONE but something along those lines!

On my last visit to Portnet Harbour in Saldanha, I came across a gent who had his Saltist CHROMED! It looked even better than a Trinidad! When I enquired he told me he had it done by someone at ESA shop in Somerset West. The make-over, including a service, cost him in the region of R400. I thought it to be reasonable..

I think I may pop your bubble!

The saltis is NOT a pure aluminium material, but rather a mix which has a 'plastic' materal mixed.

I stand corrected but the heat required from baking the powder coating or chroming will melt or warp the casing?

Shimano (Torium) has removable plates which can be replaced making your reel look brand new!

I fear that if you use your reel a great deal that the Carbontex drag washers will outlast your reel.

I've owned a Saltis for a year and it look worse than my now almost nine year old Toriums!

Hiya Kumz,

That would be great.

Just for interest I was chatting to Whaler about the same thing and took it upon myself to visit a few places in PE that specialise in aluminium coatings. PE is the centre of the motor trade and there are a number of rim manufacturers here.

They all took a detailed look and said it would cost more than the value of the reel and that’s if it could be done. They all did mention a number of catalyst paints that could do the job...no guarantee on durability!

I would be interested...but it's easier just buying a Shimano! (*Wink*)

I was wondering the same thing Trophy, the Saltist is a mixture of plastic an aluminium. To be honest, the paint job and the screws on the saltist are the only thing that lets the reel down. However the internals are rock solid. The heads on the screws get stripped easily.Hehe and i know Shimano rules, why u think this reel was packed away. Its just for the sake off having a reel that i can say is different from what every one else has.thats the only reason why i want the reel done.

I was just about to tell you guys the same thing. I took off the side plate on my saltist and unfortunatly its some cheap ass easy scraching plastic material. But I'll find out tomorow, i'm sure there's someting that can be done.

Well chaps my brother in law has a powed coating factory in PTA and he told me once that you can powder coat almost anything.

...even plastic garden chairs, you just use a different powder for different application....so yes a saltist can be powder coated one must just be carefull to "throw" the powder thin enough so that the spool wont get stuck.

Yeah, imagine,if the guys at Daiwa did a decent job at spraying the reel in the first place i wouldnt have this problem now.Imagine today the price of a Saltist,up to R2400 in some places i think, and you still pay that high price for a kak paint job.I think Daiwa needs to up their game

I went the other way. We all fish scratch proof HMG, Scratch Proof because it has no paint on the rod.

When I stripped my Saltist down to replace the drag and bearings I took some paint stripper to it which gives it a mat, dark aluminum finish.

The reel now matches the matt clean finish of my custom rod and won't be scratching anymore and being Aluminum there's no challenge with corrosion.

hannes101 - The side plate is also Aluminum but the coating is a thick layer that scratches easily.

Is anodising an option ? Appartently it is not too intricate a process, some of the more serious knife-makers can maybe help out.

Just a thought.
