Hooks, hooks, hooks

Hi Eugene,

You must have cameras in my house hahahaha i just got a parcel of hooks i ordered for my plugs , poppers and big stickbaits i use. Been tying assist hooks all day and changing split rings.

I use the owner split rings sizes from 3-5 on smaller lures and 6-9 on bigger.
Hooks i use are circles from owner and short shank vmc inline , owner c'ultiva sj41 9 o , 10 o and 11 o great hooks and jigging master , monster jigging hook 7 o to 11 o bloody strong hooks.
i find with a shorter hook shank the hook does not swing so much on the lure , this gets the fish in the mouth all the time as apposed to a longer shank hook.

Unfortunately gut hooking happens it just depends on how the fish are hitting the lures.

Thanks Frank, you're right about the shorter shanks, I've experienced the same. What fish have you had success on with the circles?

Cubera , couta, tarpon , kingfish, jack crevalle, bonitto, elf , kob and a few others. Even changed a few of my soft plastics like d.o.a shrimp , crab and sprats to circle hooks and have tied a few flies with circles and hook rate is better.
easiet way is through trial and error some options work some don't and you have to try again , that makes it so rewarding when you finally get the fish of your dreams.

I lost a total of 18 tarpon before i finally got one on lure , simply by changing the hooks to inline vmc circle in a thinner hook and slower retrieve.

Patience sometimes sucks but worth it

Cool, sounds promising. I'm keen to give it a shot, but you know how it is...when the fishing's hard you reckon nah let me not experiment in case I get a pull and it doesn't work out. Then again when the sea is boiling with predators and the fever runs high you reckon no way let me make the most of this while it lasts!

I think the only way is to rig a couple of lures with circles and leave the J's at home for a trip.

Hahaha ja it is hard to change, thats for sure. Walking and hunting fish or cruising on a boat and hunting is the best part and when you find a new way of hooking the fish it is the greatest then it is hard to go back to the old way.

Perseverance is key. I have sworn , cursed the fish gods and thrown many a tantrum lol when fishing but its an awesome sport and will never quit.

I swear, curse, throw tantrums and generally act in family unfriendly ways all the time at the water, so I can relate. But like you said, it's such an awesome sport, how can anyone ever give it up?

Very interesting topic guys. I was wonder though, when you change from trebles to circles or J hooks, surely the difference in weight between a treble and a circle would affect the action of the lure. Have you guys noticed this at all, or is the difference in action not really worth worrying about?

Also wondering about offset circles and how much of a difference they'd make. Im sure they'd improve hook-up rate but that offset might also mess with the action.

You have to remember that hook size depends on lure, i have been using OWNER SSW CIRCLE HOOKS on a few of my lures like the hedon zara spook , storm doom bell twitch and the hogy range of soft plastics and D.O.A soft plastics and does not effect the action.
Putting a heavier circle on a normal sized lure will affect it but bigger lures like plugs , poppers and stickbaits over 18-26 cm a heavier hook can be used as they are designed for more robust conditions.

if i do use trebles which is very rare i will crush or file down the barb and give each hook a slight angled bend but i rarely use them.

Ja, getting hooked with a treble cant be much fun. Also wondered for a long time why they put trebles as standard on so many lures when everyone changes them anyway.

Interesting what you mentioned about the topwater lures Eugene. Do you reckon the action would go down the toilet if you attached the circles with a short length of dacron instead of rings?

On a plug or popper i fish assist hooks no propblem but on a subsurface lure the kevlar line or dacron line causes drag and make the lure not so effective.

Interesting. What sort of length would you use on plugs and poppers, or would you have to take the lure weight and hook size into account for this?

Found this pic online a while back and it got me thinking about the dacron.

I find these to work best on a smaller floating lure, they not circles but they hit the jaw everytime and very light weight and tough as nails.

Yeah they work well i usually put a very thin peice if surgical tubing over the kevlar line itself it seems to reduce the drag of the line through the water or rub some clear silicone into the line , this leaves it still flexible yet firmer or even drag it through some melted wax.

Oh and no longer than 7cm on the cord , some guys go longer but i find 7cm to be the lucky number.

Awesome tips Frank. Thanks man! ((goodp_

Thought of trying heatshrink but didn't want to burn the dacron in the process.

Those inline VMC's look nice too. Are they barbless? Can't see the pic too well.

Variety indeed. Good to be prepared and to have the right tools for the job at hand when you need them. ...

reminds me of a quote i heard somewhere...

“I carry a shower curtain folded up neatly in my wallet, because you never know when you’ll never know.” ;)

They not barbless but i file the barbs down , they used to make a barbless one but i cannot seem to find them anymore. I use a hairdryer (with a lot of wife voice in the distance haha ) hold it close uup on high setting or even a small gas powered blow torch from a distance works as kevlar does not burn so easily.
