What gear to bring along??

If its your first trip to sea, you MIGHT get sea-sick. I've been fortunate in not ever experiencing it, but have seen many succumb to it!! Not a pretty sight. If you're in doubt, take some motion sickness tablets, like Avomine, Stugeron, etc. Your local phamacy will be able to advise you on any other generic motion sickness pills. Also, try to get to bed early the night before and try not to party too hard the night before either!! Have a SMALL breakfast and you'll be OK.

Most important thing to bring along is FOOD!! Pack a lunch box, as you tend to get hungry at sea. Bring at least 1ltr of water with for drinking too. Its surprising how quickly you get dehydrated from sitting in the sun. Another essencial item is sunblock and a peak cap. The sun not only burns you from the top, but also reflects off the water, buring you from the bottom!! A warm jersey or two and an old pair of jeans and tackies will work. If you have gum boots, or even cut-off boots like the ones we use for rock fishing, use them!! Oilskins are nice, as it allows you to keep your clothes clean, but not a neccessaty. NO WADERS ALLOWED!! They're a danger on a boat!!

Tackle wise, i fish mainly with handlines, but have quite a bit of rod and reels available. If anyone wants to use a outfit, just pm me and i'll arrange it. If you have, dropshot type of tackle works very well. Short soft 6-7' rod with a small multiplier or spinning reel is perfect. I have some 3kg line drop shot type outfits, which i use for grunters at Breede River that works very well for bank fish. Otherwise, a Daiwa 30 type reel on a 5-7' boat rod with 6-10kg line is more than ample. Hooks, 1/0-2/0 is the ideal size. Remember, the fish we're targetting is 500grams to about 4-5kg's. So, generally, the lighter your tackle, the better you'll do.

Bait. Pilchard's and chokka/squid/octopus work very well. So does, white mussel. BEST bait how-ever is prawn!! But seeimg as how difficult it is to get prawn these days, i stick with pilchard's and chokka.

Safety wise: my boats a butt-cat. These vessels are used extensively on the East coast by commercial fisherman. Their sea-worthiness is legendary!! The entire boat, under the deck is foam filled. What this means is that the boats UNSINKABLE!! You need to put a weight of well over 5000kg's (5ton) on board, just to be able to push the boat under water. So, you're PERFECTLY safe afloat!!:D:D

Hiya

There's been some concern about too much interest in this trip and not enough space for all to go.

Lets work on first come first serve basis. That way, it'll be fair to those who've responded first.

My aim is pretty simple: to expose as many anglers as i can to the joys of boat angling!!

So, judging by the interest, i'm more than happy to make a FEW trips of this nature, so to accomodate the guys who are un-able to make the first trip, for what-ever reasons! I know guys have family commitments and its not easy to get free time, so not to cause strife on the forum, lets agree on say 2-3 trips. Sea conditions does'nt play a major roll here, as long as the wind isn't too strong, we'll be able to fish!!

Hiya

I'm happy with the date if all the others are too!

Bait. We normally work on about one 5kg box of Pilchard per angler for the day. Most of the time, you use between half a box and 3/4 box of 5kg Pilchard. If you're using mussel and chokka or any other bait, your pilchard usage will also be less. So, lets budget on half a 5kg box per angler. I can get pilchards a bit cheaper than most tackle stores. If any of you guys want me to arrange 5kg box's of pilchards, just pm me and i'll get hold of some!!

Squid/chokka is pretty expensive these days, with it costing up to R70.00 per kg. Octopus is cheaper, if you can find it for sale!! and works just as well. If you guys are keen, we can even spend a half an hour in the morning trying to catch some chokka/squid for bait................

Directions to Simons Town.

Lets start off by Muizenberg/Baileys Cottage. Continue on this road, you'll pass St.James, KalkBay and then you'll enter Fish-hoek. In Fish-hoek, you'll find a circle, keep LEFT. The road continues, with the sea on your left and the mountain on your right, until you reach Simons Town. As you enter Simons Town, you'll see the Gun Battery on your left. Its the First Building on your left. Continue a bit more and you'll get the Navy Base's entrance. You can't miss it. Its on the left and has two HUGE metal gates. The very first road after the Navy's entrance, you turn left. You'll be in a large parking lot with restuarants, like Bertha's and Salty Sea Dog. Park your car and walk onto the concrete jetty!! Simple!!

For guys coming from the M5, carry straight down the M5 until you get a circle at Sunrise beach. Take the last turn right and follow the road. You'll go under a small bridge and then get a robot/traffic light. Turn left at the traffic light and that will take you to Baileys cottage. SImply follow the above directions further!!

For guys coming on the N2, get onto the M3. Thats the road that goes pass UCT. Carry on with it until it ends. Now take a left and continue until this road also ends. Then take a right and this road will take you to Baileys Cottage. Then simply follow the first set of directions from there!!

Otherwise, Claremont Main Road or Victoria Road (upper main Road) in Salt River. Simply drive this road STRAIGHT and it'll also take you to Baileys Cottage.

Anyone from the Strand/Gordons Bay area, take the N2 and take the Baden Powell offramp. Turm left and continue this road until you get to Sunrise Circle. Take the second road in the circle and follow this  follow the road. You'll go under a small bridge and then get a robot/traffic light. Turn left at the traffic light and that will take you to Baileys cottage. SImply follow the above directions further!!

Hope that helps!!

ps. as you enter Fish Hoek, there is a Engen Garage on your left hand side. Pretty much all the fisherman stop there to fill up their boats and buy Pilchard. They sell 5kg box's of Pilchards at R35.00 a box. They also have a 24hr shop that sells coffee and hot chocolate as well as muffins and some assorted cakes and brownies!!:D:D As well as the usual drinks and chips and chocolates. Well worth a stop if you did forget something!!
