Hi Northwards!

Nice sized fish! Those largescales sure do put up an excellent fight on light tackle!

Come over to my office for a coffee, and well work out your crab order. ;)

Nice yellow!

Last week I tried out a 'new' technique (the die-hard fly fisherman will probably stone me for this...) for yellows in smaller streams.

I basically did short line nymphing, but used an ultra light spinning outfit instead of fly gear. Lures used were small flies and medium Sada curlies on nr 16/18 hooks with a split shot on the line to get it down in the current.

Cast upstream and let drift through likely lies or cast across stream and drag and sink into slower flows next to faster channels.

I got the bites and 3 solid hookups, but got snagged and broken, mainly because I didn't expect the thundering runs and my tackle might have been a bit too light.

Found that the my motoroil/green & red curlies worked best.

Will definitely try this out again and report back.

Cheers

Well after taking Mkhondo's excellent advice and practicing a WHOLE lot of strategies I have discovered a whack of success on the Salmo Hornet 2 and 3cm range. Most takes have been on the downstream edge white water where its rolling over shallow structure into deeper water. Had plenty good fish in deeper riffels and also the heads and tails of large pools, either where the water is slowing down and deepening or where its speeding up and getting shallower... alot of takes happen on the down side of isolated structure where food might be getting caught in the eddies :) best lures so far are the Salmos! Thanks for the hint Jake! Hot Perch works now and then but up here im getting more takes on grey colours :). What's working well is a medium - fast retrieve accross the current and also casting in diagonaly up stream and reeling in a tiny bit faster than the flow of the water to give the lure action and direction. As soon as I show my profile though they disapear...got to stay hidden! I first started getting strikes by casting down stream and locking the spool so the lure would do its own thing in the current, sometimes just helping it a little to get in behind the bigger rocks. Thanks Herman! Thanks Jake! And big THANKS to Mkhondo!! Fish ON! ::slr::

At the moment I'm really itching to catch my first smallscale and largescale yellows on lure.

Been doing some research and came across these catches rather close to home in Joburg where I stay.

Apparently a bloodworm fly is doing the business in catching these beauties.

Some nice pics and videos of fish taken on fly ...
