Hi there
I go to mauritius very often and have always wanted to fish the but the only place I can fish is inside the reef/lagoon, I can go by canoe and I go on a catamaran very often because one of my family members own the business so I was wandering what big fish I could find in the deep water of the lagoon that can be caught on lures? When I say big I mean 5kg and over. Are there really GT there? heard rumours of people catching them there.

We went to Mauritius in the winter season and i'll tell the fishing was amazing! There was not a day we didn't fish and there were plenty of big fish and a variety of species was caught. The hotel we stayed in didn't mind us using the paddle boats to troll of and fish from and we also payed a local with a boat and a little motor to take us trolling.

The soft lures didnt last very long as 90% of the fish had teeth and tore the lures apart. We caught plenty of kingfish(I dont know all the different types) but the gt's were plenty and lots of couta, herring, grouper, trumpet fish , bone fish and many more. The only regret I have is not taking one of my custom jig rods with and jigging in the 30m drop we found...

We also fished the rivers and caught some really awesome fish in them but they were small. Species- couta, kingfish pickhandle and some species I dont know and didnt always have the camera present.

The best fight I had was two kingis caught in the sea at the river mouth. I waded in to about half my body length and casted some paddle tail dropshots. Wow what a fight! one about 8kg(hook bent open and lost it right in front of me) and the other about 6kg(landed) and they had yellow fins... They also loved the poppers.

Sounds awesome! Which hotel did you stay at?

The Tamassa hotel. They were really nice there and we also took a all inclusive package so all the booze and food was free. The paddle boats worked well for the babelas...lol although when you get the first take on a dropshot you are trolling then you skrik hom weg!!!lol There is a pic of hotel

But I think the northern side of the island is better for fishing from what I heard from the locals...

Take lots of small stickbaits in the 40 to 100gr and poppers Halco roosta's will be fine and plenty of GT ice creams
