Are you looking for a rod to do both popping and jigging with, or two separate rods?
I would certainly advise getting yourself one of each, especially when heading to a place as full of big fish on both jigs and poppers... A jigging rod can toss a popper a short distance, but not enable you to achieve the distance and action you'll want, and you can jig with a popping rod, but you are going to be hurting bad after a short time as the length makes life tough when jigging, especially anything over 200 grams!
We have a couple jigging rod options for you, that are cartainly built and designed to klap the snot out of the big nunus that Bassas will deliver!

Manta - The Saltiga DF is defintely up to it mate!! Superb reel!
Its a dedicated popping reel, so is higher geared than a dedicated jigging reel, so will be a little more hard work when jigging heavy jigs, but its a superb piece of equipment!
If you have the opportunity to upgrade the drag washers to Carbontex before you go, thats even better! You'll get a longer lasting smoother drag, and when you are in an isolated place like Bassas, you want to be sure your gear performs PERFECTLY!

cool , I am from Durban will my local Kingfisher or Basil Mannings be able to do the upgrade ? Or is it a send away wait a few weeks epic I need to go through.My goal is to land that elusive 30 kg GT once done , pull out the light stuff and have some ripping fun.My Saragosa is going to bleed the red dye out the spool.
Reefs - Mate, you know me bro, Stella FA is where my heart lies!! All 3 reels are incredible, but I think the Stella FA has the best proven track record... the new SW is awesome, but I've not had the pleasure of fishing one...
Haven't fished the DF either, but its certainly got its followers, and has knocked some monster fish on the head in its time.

Not too impressed with the Stella SW; my mate just got one and the gears don't sound too good; i have the SW20000PG, SW8000PG (Japan models) and they are the bomb. I also have the 10000FA, 8000FA, 4000FD, 3000FD and they are awesome reels.
Next purchase is going to be Stella SW10000PG to match my new Blue Rose S517F that is on the way.

Not that i am an expert in any way, but apparently there is no difference in the gears of the SW and the SWPG (i thought there was, but i read a good report on the hulltruth forum where the guy said that he has taken both apart and there is no difference).
The difference appears to be in the gear ratios.
SW8000PG has a 4.9:1 gear ratio (PG is power gear) and drag is 25kg
SW8000 has a 5.8:1 ratio and the drag is 25kg.
SW10000pg gear ratio 4.9:1 drag 23 kg
SW10000 gear ratio 5.8:1drag 23kg
SW20000PG gear ratio 4.4:1 drag 25kg
SW20000 gear ratio 4.4:1 drag 25kg
The SW's have different gear materials compared to the FA's and some other upgrades.
I still like the FA's a lot, especially the 10 000FA; it is really a solid reel.
My mates SW20000 may just not have been lubricated properly from the factory, but i will continue to purchase the SW PG's even though i cannot read the Jap manuals and have no customer support.
There is a really good article on http://www.360tuna.com on servicing a 8000FA; took mine totally apart and serviced it at work the day i was going fishing in between working on the computer and trying to make it not too obvious.
I have been through too many Stradics, baitrunners, spirexes etc. buy a Stella and you will have a machine that will perform flawlessly and outlast 10 other reels.
Have to get back to packing for tomorrow.

Nice post on the Stella service Reefman; i love those reel service posts.
My favorite part of putting the reel back together is the roller clutch springs; those little suckers just want to jump everywhere. I don't like putting grease on the roller clutch assembly, just a light dash of WD40.
I hope Manta got sorted on his rod; strayed a bit off the topic.

Off topic and sorry for the thread hijack but this is the most thorough review of the Stella SW I have ever seen. Great for all those reel geeks out there (Mark?) haha
I only skim read it but wow really great depth of detail.
Interestingly apparently no difference between USDM and JDM Stella SWs...

Hey buckwheat i already read that article;he would not know if the gears were made from a different metal just by visual inspection though.
