Here is the letter that has been sent with your names attached

Subject: Catch and Release at the Annual Jozini Tiger Fish Bonanza[/b]

Dear Sir,

I write this letter with good intentions.

I run a fishing charter/guide business; one of the places that I operate from is Lake Jozini specifically targeting Tiger Fish.

Many anglers are concerned about the slaughter of 100’s of Tiger Fish at the Annual Jozini Tiger Fish Bonanza, and we are concerned about this and so I write this letter on behalf of them and myself.

The purpose of this letter is to start a communication with your club who organises this competition in order to convince you to convert this annual competition to purely Catch & Release, whilst I understand that it is too late to do anything about the 2010 Bonanza, we would like to see these changes happen from the 2011 Bonanza.

Personally I would like to fish this competition, but refuse until it becomes only a Catch & Release competition and there are also several anglers that used to fish this competition who now feel the same.

There are methods that can be used and that have already been used like colour boards measuring the length of fish and so on which have already successfully been used at other Tiger Fish competitions at Lake Jozini recently.

I look forward to your response.

Kind Regards

If you look at the history of the competition of the last 2 years 50% of the top 10 fish has been released. I fish this competition each year and after day one a min weight is set and no fish onder this are allowed to be weight. There is a T&R weigh station during the day available. The winning fish of 2009 was a T&R fish. The competition are striving to move towards a T&R tournament. I know of boats who has fished the tiger competition for 6 years and who has not caught a tiger fish. We must rather look at the netting in the dam as they catch more fish in one night than all the anglers fishing Jozini with rods in one year.

I'm not sure why it is even an issue.

All you need is, the rule must say that no dead fish are weighed and must be released alive. If the fish doesn't make it then tough, you are out of the running, the fish is disqualified.

I've been advocating this for years and got a lot of resistance from the don't cares. To them a fish is something you throw in a bucket and weigh so you can get something. A bit of a mind change is required. The time when our natural resources existed in abundance is gone forever, and if the little bit left is not taken care of then it may be lost also.

Imo, if a person can afford the boat, tackle and especially the fuel (4 5 c) to take part in such a competition then surely the required equipment to treat his fish with a bit of respect is in order.

Weigh no dead fish !

Illegal gill netting is supposed to be taken care of by the authorities. The problem with these gill netters is they have also - same as the 'authorities' no sense of responsibility (typical) - the nets are put out and never recovered, resulting in dead fish in these nets. Sorry to say, but it falls in perfectly with so many wrongs in this FANIE up little coutry of ours as the authorities just turns a blind eye. If you however does same you will make TV news headlines, ok, so a bit of discrimination there as well.

It will in the end - as so many things before - be the few caring FANIE that has to take control to save the buggered up issue - and probably get blamed for the situation also.

I just had a short talk with Bulldog, and he said fresh water issues are also attended to by Recreational Fishing Services now, if gill nets is an issue it should be reported to them recfishserv@yahoo.com

Cary (Bulldog) also said he does get his PM's.

Agreed Fanie, but remember, try not to make things about race/colour/etc. All that will do is divert attention from the point and create tension eslewhere. The fastest way to get people to stop helping is to be racist or make comments like this. If it is your opnion rather not voice it where it could cause a problem. The aim of this topic is to get C&R at the tournament.

Anyway, I was also concerned about this when I saw it on tv. It's quiet shocking to see such a huge event run in this way. I hope something is done about it.

I belief that the Tiger fish are on the bite again, and some 4kg+ has bas been caught. Do any of you know where i can get hold of the measuring sheets/boards to measure the tiger fish and test it against the scale.

I participated in the competition this year. I think there’s a definite change in the mindset of most of the anglers.  The 20 biggest fish received prizes and of this 20 fish, 15[/b] were released, including the winning fish.

Fishing was tough for most of the anglers. The smallest (20[suP]th[/suP] place) was 3.8kg and the winning fish was 5.7kg.
