Hi Guys

I need some advise from those of you who have done a Category C license.

I am currently in possession of a Category "R" skippers and in the process of upgrading to Category C as I have certified my Jet ski with a "D" rating and want to legally fish of my jet ski offshore.

With regards to surf launching practicals, I have been given 2 different requirements by 2 SAMSA officials. Initially I was told that I can surf launch with the jet ski, which I did under supervision of a SAMSA official, All 12 launches where done and the SAMSA official signed off my log sheet.

When I went to right my exam I was told that the surf launches on a jet ski doesn't count and I have to surf launch with ski boat in order to qualify or a Cat E or C skippers.

I didn't right the exam as I am trying to get clarity with regards to this issue.

Guys if any of you recently obtained your E or C skippers please let me know what was required from you. And if you are from KZN who assisted you.

Thanks

I done my Cat E. following is on the ticket, Day Skipper limited to 1nm from shore- proceeding to sea from a commercial harbour, fishing harbour or a protected launch site.

No surf launches required.

Regarding your cat c for jet ski i dont know the rules....

Your skippers ticket showing category e is valid for the jetski only.

Should you wish to upgrade, you can have your ticket endorsed 'd', which means that you wrote the 'c' exam, but only did the 'd' launches. They type this up onto your original (if you want).

I would suggest that you do your skippers 'c' exam, then pay the local skiboat club or assessor, for the surf launches (on a boat), then you have your full ticket.

skippers for the jet ski guys!!

1) get 25 hrs sea time and log it!
2) complete the Cat E theory exam!
3) do 12 launches with quilified skipper, either on your ski or he must be on another ski!get him to sign the log!
4) do your last launch in front of an examiner on your ski(registered)
5)Build up sea time with cat E ticket at least 50 hrs then uprade the ticket to say limited to 5nm with cat D craft or PWC

What do you think? I think thats the easiest and its legal!!

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your input.

@ Lemon following our conversation this morning, I have told the examiner that I will write the C exam an have the "D" endorsement limited to a PWC. He will look into it and get back to me. Thanks again for your advice.

Lemon, so if i do my cat C skippers ticket on a ski boat, i'll be ok to take a jet ski out then. Am i correct in saying this?

Yes !! The marine notice says that the craft that the student is trained on and does the practical on is what should be on his skippers ticket! I would imagine skippering a ski boat is more complicated than skippering a jet ski! however they are totally different crafts to handle, thus said I think people with a cat C surf launch indorsment should not be under the impression you can get on a jet ski and go! Its takes practice and advice from skippers with jet skis.

In a nut shell yes thats fine!

Hi Guys

Just an update, I wrote the Catergory C theory last week, should I pass I will have a limitation endorsed for Catergory D PWC's only. There is no need for me to do launches with a ski-boat. Here's hoping I pass and will be legally on the water by the weekend.

Hey Lemon

I did manage to complete all the questions, the only section that made me scratch my head was on Chartwork. The rest of the questions where similar to the questions asked when I wrote my Category R a few years ago.

Yeah I know what you mean, feel like phoning the examiner to find out if I passed or not. I did the launches with Terence Tub from Durban Skiboat club.

I've been doing some enquiring and Natal deep sea angling association seems to be the cheapest at R1800 to write the Cat C and then an additional R1800 for the practicals with Terence.

Paul Dawson also offers the same course but its all done in 5 days full time at a cost of R4550
