Mission Man, if I may, I would suggest targeting Cats in the Vaal River more than the Vaal Dam. Not that the Dam doesn't produce, I've personally just found them harder to catch. Im not sure what it is, & perhaps somebody with alot of time on their hands can crack it, but for some reason the Cats there don't bite like at Bloemhof or other dams in the Vaal system, except for Tago which is another option for you. The Vaal Dam branches out alot & I've read some debates about it, that finding where they are is the trick, & with all the branches they might be concentrated in some areas & scarce in another. I have not heard of Oranjeville being one of the notorious Catfish spots, but then there is also all the weather considerations. I would bet you your success rate would be better in the Vaal River than Oranjeville during the warmer months, or any other time for that matter, (exception being Tago if you insist on the dam)....too bad UJ closed down, I caught some cats there too. If you measure your success rate at the dam to the river, Im confident the river will trump it.

I speak from personal experience & some of the comments I've read on a few forums regarding the Vaal, use it, dont use it...

I beg to difer I've caught some of my biggest catz in the vaal dam 15.5kg Tago, 17.6 tago, 16.0 kg Le gRange farm Vaal dam, the thing is about The Vaal system, get to know your water, know the deep holes, know the baits.... BBB

Of course, Tago,.....I mentioned it in my post did you notice? To each his own, I'm just stating my opinion, I still think that if you're targeting Cats, give the Vaal River a bash, & see how it compares to the Vaaldam, you know what the exception is there right :)

Steel I agree, dams are harder to catch in. Its a much wider volume of water, so fish aren't concentrated as much as they are in a river. A dam you need to learn what the fish in there are doing. Once you do that its heaven. Also I formly believe that the bigger barbel are in dams. Its up to you to work out what they want, and where they are.

I've already earmarked the resort in Frankfort on the Wilge River on my to-do list this season. Inloop where those Cats came out caught by Enigma another goal to fish at. So many places to visit, so few weekends to fish....:fbash

my uncle has a cabin/hut 3 or 4 down from this guys. that where i caught my first and only Barbel and where i hooked a big one, looked round 1.6-1.8m in length and when my mate tried to scoop it with the net it snapped my line(that's what got me hooked on targeting barbel). i also landed 4.5 & 5kg common carp there the same day. lovely spot to go to though. just a pity about the management of it though. but still remains one of my favorite so far.

Is anyone producing barbel yet? Back to the point :) I live where the wilge enters the vaal, taking good fish, but are there any fish on the move at the moment or still to cold?

Daai blaksams wat die vis langs die pad verkoop by Bon Accord het heavy baie babers in die 2 - 3 kg klas gehad wat daar gehang het. Inteendeel dit was meer babers as Karp. Ek dink Roodeplaat sal ook nou woes begin produce want dit was lekker warm die afgelope ruk daar en die water level het mooi gestyg wat meer kos vir hulle beteken.

Those fish are netted by sargent shei from vaal marina police station, netted illegaly and sold for profit, I been moaning about it for years but noone stops him. I've seen large mouth yellows 12 to 16 kilo range being netted and sold, he also sells them at the deneysville turn off and a few other spots, ill put a bait in tonight in some deep water and see if I can pull a fish

Take a view pics of his operations and send them to me. I know some people who can sort this out.

As soon as he a net his the water again ill be on it, I just have to be careful as last time I was threatened to be locked up or shot

hey guys, my brother and i are looking at going through to Tago on Sunday and coming back monday.

i cant handle blanking anymore thus we choose tago in the hope that something(hopefully big) will come along.

as we've never been there before i'd like to find out if any of you have, if so which spot do you find most productive (in the middle or round the corner to the right where the creak is).

any advice at all would be great. neither of us have a canoe/kayak so we will be casting from the bank.

Good luck mission man! Dont know Tago but if ur casting from the side look for deap water close to u. Also take ur Elbe and Grandwave to get some distance if needed. Im sure u will get a fish on this time so on return give us a good report!
