You laugh, but when I kept marine fish, I put sergeant majors in the tank and a thing called a thornfish and I eventually had to shoot them, to get them out, short of draining the whole tank.

I made  a small hawaiin sling and shot the buggers.

The thornfish would bite the scales off of the other fish and eat the scales.

I dont shoot your pet fish, it is just that my wife and I do a lot of work with abused animals who have their eyes shot out or have their backs broken by people.

We were accused of being cruel, by shooting fish, so the argument went like this ( there was some artificial intelligence involved).

Imagine if you take an apple put a 12/0 hook in it attach it to line and cast it into a field while safely standing on platform, where the predators cannot get to you.

You then wait for a Kudu to pick it up and then strike and set the hook.

The kudu goes for its first run, but you stop it and you feel the kopstamp, as it bucks and tries to get the hook out of its mouth, but you reel it in a and as it gets to the platform, you stick a gaff in it and haul it onto the platform.

You either club it to death with a pacifier, or stuff it in a box with no air, so it suffocates, or even better, you hook it through the back with a bigger hook attached to a trace and and let it out to see if you can catch a lion. which you treat the same or release it.

Compare that to hunting with a rifle.

I love a good healthy debate! lets hope this one doesn't go south as many do with insults being thrown around.
It's great to see someone with a passion who are willing to help out like your wife and yourself.. Awesome!
Remember, we are all entitled to our own opinion...

My opinion on the above is this:
You have just described fishing in a nutshell, it is no different than that... However, dropshotting standing waist deep at night in a river mouth is a bit different. lol! Especially in the PSJ area.. Eish!

Re: Pellet Guns, I hate them when they are in the wrong hands!!!! I have about 30 neighbors with many of them having young kids with pellet guns. My one stock dam is about 30 meters away from their boundary walls and I have had plenty of "MY DUCKS" shot and wounded. I use the term "My Ducks" as I am there custodian, I provide a safe haven for them... Most of the youngsters have been sorted out by myself (Without informing parents) and I think many of them have a better understanding of nature and a good healthy fear of being tied up in a grain bag and drowned by me! Both my kids have pellet guns and do not shoot any indigenous birds ever! (With exception to the odd Guinea Fowl for the pot) They are however allowed to shoot any invasive bird species they find.. Cats are never shot with a pellet gun, something bigger and faster is used!

Here is my problem with Cats!
They are a natural predator and the hunting blood always comes out! Even though a single cat can cause so much damage to local species there is no control on sales or distribution of them. If I must make a call (which I do) as who gets to live between a nesting wild duck or a domestic cat, the Cat looses every time! It should be there and does not belong in our eco system. They are dispatched as humanly as possible. I too have a passion for animals and am tired of seeing local species suffer because of introduced animals by people who dont seem to care..

Here is an example.
If my dog jumps over your fence/wall and kills one of your pets, I will be responsible for any damages... As a dog/animal owner, I must take responsibility for them and ensure I keep my animals safe & confined to my yard/property. After all, you cant just let your pets/animals roam free through the neighborhood.
However, many cat owners simply don't give a (%@#$)! Cats are left to roam and cause havoc.. Why is this allowed?
So, bottom line is this, I play GOD on my little piece of heaven, I get to decide who thrives and who goes to meet his maker...

In closing, the one dam wall has the grass cut very short, the north half is no mans land (No birds nest that side anymore) the second half is the kill zone! If it comes past the center line it gets wound up like a spring! No remorse whatsoever!

People need to take care of pets and choose a suitable animal rather than simply purchasing any animal in an effort to teach there kids responsibilities.
Parenting fail!

P.s. Do you think I could catch a Kudu with an apple?
What would be best, std sliding trace with circle hook I presume?

No, the best bait for Kudu is freshly cut noors.

They love that stuff so much that in the dry season, when the farmers cut them with a brush cutter, the kudus loose all fear and walk behind the tractor, like sheep.

PsJ is like mogadisho in Somalia, where a few UN troops went missing, after going to the beach.

The Somalis eat camel and they have a camel abbattoir there that discharges waste into the sea and the Zambies get attracted.

I wont intentionally hurt a cat to an extent that it is suffering, I think it is best to dispatch them swiftly or to just scare them out of the area... the one big burmese I popped last night was busy chewing on something, a dove I think... might train him to leave the birds alone now lol!
I did not have to endure the horrible moaning last night, mission accomplished... I am passionate about all animals, but ANY animal that is left unchecked becomes an issue and I have no issues doing my best to right it as best I can.. you wont find me losing any sleep about the bass and carp I donate to the locals around whatever dam I'm fishing :)
