Often these snakes are for display purposes only, however I have seen them for sale before as an exotic via the following loophole

- The snake is imported from a neighbouring country and then sold as an exotic. The seller needs to have a copy of the import permit.

- Most indigineous venomous snakes are sold this way ie Gaboon vipers ,Mambas, puff adders etc

- For example the Gaboon Viper at my local petshop has import papers from Namibia even though they dont naturally occur there. So all you need to do is rock up with R4k and you can leave with her, no extra permits etc need to be applied for ...
Antjar, I was in Keetmanshoop the whole of 2011 and there are PLENTY Gaboon Viper there! More towards the East(Kalahari Gemsbok Park) I was on a farm about 80km from the border and we saw plenty!! Stay far away from those buggers! Puffadders I still caught and relocated, but Gaboon?? NFW!!!

WP34, I believe you may be mistaking/confusing the Gaboon Adder with one of the Horned Adder species. Gaboon Adders are a tropical species and there range does not extend down that far south on the west coast. The furthest I know of is northern Angola. They are however found from Mtubatuba in KZN up to Malawi... Thick forest areas!

perhaps something like this?
Bitis caudalis, the Horned Adder... we found this one on a canyon walk in southern Angola

@Wp34

Gaboon vipers camo is evolved for rainforest floors with lots of leaf litter..its got to be one of the most beautiful snakes in the world..

Ive also been hunting in that area of Namibia before , Ive only seen a Cape Cobra and Horned adder

Awesome pic Aqua! wow!
I'm pretty sure it is one of the "Bitis" species..
I think the species WP may have encountered in that area is the Bitis cornuta (Many horned adder) They tend to like the rocky dry areas and sometimes have a very striking colour/pattern. WP, could this be it?

That can be it!! The Wambo's om the farm called it the "Baboon snake" Maybe I confused them with Gaboon??

I'm keen on a snake, but I'm trying to wait until the rat/mouse shortage subsides. Nice pic's you have there.

If I can give any advice, go for one of the bigger constrictors, easier to keep en-caged, easier to clean habitat, safer and much easier to feed in a built up neighborhood!........
Hmmmm, this one will get me into trouble, I can feel it already! Got many cats roaming free around your spot? lol!
Larger snakes are so easy,,,,
Beeep beep beep beeep beeeeep,,, Hello! is that the SPCA? Yes! I would like a cat for my pet... got any? lol!

P.s. Sorry, I don't like cats! They kill my birds around here, worst invasive specie known to man that is simply allowed to run a mock....

Awesome pics Aqua... I live for this stuff...
I spent almost 1 year up in the strip/sector 20 in the mid 80's, as soon as my officers found out I was from Zim and new all about catching tigers thats most of what I ended up doing,,, A guide for R152,00 per month plus R75,00 danger pay! lol! Spend a lot of time tracking and catching snakes...
Got tagged once by a rock python. Bliksum! This "wench" tore me to pieces and every bite/tear went septic,,, ended up in hospital on drips from a non venomous snake...Pffft! Spent another week trying to convince my w/o that I was trying to save it from being chomped by fan belts in a samil 50,,, Luckily it was a protected species so I was cut some slack. lol! Good fishing up that side, would love to take my kids up one day....

I was thinking of a little Ball Python. I'd like to try my hand at producing a clutch of eggs a few years from now. I think it'll be a lot of fun hatching out a brood of babies, lol!
