Hi guys,

As we know, sites like http://www.cabelas.com , http://www.tacklewarehouse.com , http://www.basspro.com offer very good prices for bass angling equipment but the problem is the shipping costs are 45% of the total purchase price. This means if we order small Quantities it is not going to be worth it.

If you are interested we can place a single order and the shipping costs can be divided.

If you are interested, add your name to the list.

Thank you

I might be keen..but how will it work? Do we each paid 45% of our own order for shipping? Coz then isn't that the same as ordering ourselves?? If the shipping was a set price it would be cheaper, but that % screws u over a bit i think...

Might be wrong, i dont know what the whole deal involves though...

If you order through USPS it takes about a month to get here because of SA postal diservice. Sometimes if the people at the post office here in SA like yourstuff it just will never arrive. Simple as that. Make sure you ship with Fedex.

If you place orders larger than R500, you will most likely be liable for Customs duty and VAT, and also need to register as an importer.  I do not think fishing equipment attracts custom duty but VAT will be calculated at your order price + 10% * 14%.

Sorry, i think if you order more than 3 times a year, you will need to register as an importer.  But maybe someone else is more clued up than me on this.

Yes, avdw68 is right. More than 3 times per year, or 20k per year, then you must register. It's free, though, and I happen to be registered - if you need help. ::happyd:

Otherwise, we could alternate - each person can take a turn, and that way we could bypass the need to register.

What do you say, guys?

Simple - we've been doing this with radio contol items for many years. Let's say the merchandise in worth $1000, and the shipping $200. The, between 10 guys, we would each pay only $20 shipping - a large saving indeed!

Then we pay the import duties, and Bob's you aunty! Generally save around 20 - 30% over local suppliers - however, let's NOT FORGET about out local dealers. Some of them try very hard to give us good prices, and very good & friendly service.

It's not their fault the devil controls the imports to SA!!!

But the shipping from Bass Pro shops is calculated by 45% of the total order, so each person pays 45% of there own order whether there 10 people or 1 person, u know what i mean?

$1000order = $200shipping BUT
$200order = $40shipping

Unless u save on import duties or something???
Are the import duties charged at a fixed rate or is it weight or something?

I think he meant to say that on small orders the shipping can work out to almost 45% of the total order price.  Normally shipping fees are charged on weight, with a certain minimum, so it will definately be cheaper to bunch the orders together.  I have done this plenty of times from Amazon.

guys I will get all the detail from basspro today. I have sent them a mail.

I am not registered as a importer but I have been purchasing monthly from the UK and some of my orders is way over R25K.
My supplier sends via FEDEX and then I pay custom fees and TAX.

Torpedo Jack, If I do register as a importer what costs will I save?

Another good source is Ebay, they have large amount of items for bass angling and the shipping charges are not so expensive. Some Sellers offer free shipping :). It is something to look at.

I do support local sellers but here in RTB we have 3 shops. 1 is operating from a garage and only stocks sensation, the other 1 have limited bass equipment. The last has a huge variety but flippen expensive.

Hey Bigkano,

Unfortunately you save nothing from registering. It's just another way in which Big Brother can keep his eye on us. :swear

I did not really want to register as an importer, but my third order from overseas had just arrived in SA (in 2007), when I received a call from Customs & Irritations, saying that I would need to register before they would release the parcel. That's why I registered.
