I wish everyone thought that, I would make a lot more money. ;)
Let's face it, if our local online tackle sites woke up, they would also make more money! www.bass.co.za is OK, but limited stock, www.rodandmarine.co.za advertises a lot of nice goodies, but can't be arsed to sell it!

I agree..

Bass.co.za is legend and i use them, but they just need more stuff.

RodandMarine would be nice if it was easier to use. (no prices in cart, only 1 postage option, no service...etc.) and they dont have that much stuff either.

If someone made a UBER SA online tackle store i rate they would kill it. Like, a BassProShop catalogue in SA at a good price with good service....ahhhhhhh...would be good...

Hi Gents the way I do it is the following,I have a shipping adress in Florida US, that I ship all my stuff to,there are a lot of online tackle shops that will ship for free in the US if you place orders over $50 or $100,I tend to make use of them a lot,Basspro will charge $12.50 per order to Frorida,it seems that the amount does not matter as all my orders has always been $12.50,on average it will take 5 to 6 days to reach FL.The company I use in FL now ships via FEDEX to SA .max 4 days,I release the shipment on say a Thesday and Friday morning I have my parcel, they charge $6 per pound to ship, the nice thing here is I place orders at different shops,in 6 days they have all arrive,I release via the internet,3/4 days later I have all my goodies,I have brought from Power poles,Rods,Reels,Fishfinders, props you name it,at a fraction of the price, you can buy it here, the latest order , 2x Lowrance HDS-5 fishfinders, local price for both R23789.00,all in all shipping, vat the lot,R11502.90,it makes you think what the local importers are making.Do not think you are going to save any $$$$ if you are only willing to spent $50 or $100,what I found that the average order around $6-700 is where you can save a lot of money. You have to shop around, certain things here are cheaper than in the US,but stock also plays a big role in importing,it all depends what you are looking for,I am a new release junkie,99% of the time I will have stuff before the importer even knows its out, small tip,Bass Proshop not always the cheapest, shop around,if I can help lets talk,I get stuff every week,I must say it is for my own use,I do not sell to any body

Hi afrifil,

Interesting post, thanks.

Have you ever had a problem with something you bought (electronics for example) and had to send it back for replacement?

If so, what was the cost and turnaround time for this exercise?

And what about only being allowed to bring something in 3 times a year?

Isn’t it amazing how small the world has become?

your post got me looking for electronics on .com sites. found a site too. www.gpscity.com

a quick question, on purchasing gps units, do we pay import duties / vat or both?

Fishton, yes the world is a very small place, and for some retailers or even importers they have not yet realize this, you need 3 things to play the global economy,a credit card, postal address and internet and you can buy anything you can think of. Regarding the 3x a year imports,I will speak to some of my shippers and find out,I have been lucky on the electronic side, but I have a issue regarding the so call warranty that the local agents will not honor because you have not bought it local,I had a social chat to one of the local agents one day regarding this issue, and he admitted that by saying  "you have not bought it from us" is some times the easy way out of the situation, the fact is they do not carry the warranty, but the manufacturer,if the manufacturer offers a international warranty they have to honor irrespective where you bought it,then on the other hand if you save more than 60-70% of the local price, buy another one and still save some $$$.

Figjam,if the goods come declared as fishing accessories or electronics there are no duties to pay, beware if you bring nice fishing shirts, rain suits or any clothing you will pay between 50-60% duties,I will add a cap or two when I bring in lures or the invoice has a lot of items on them they won't pick it up,VAT is VAT you will always pay that on the declared value, all goods out of US will come at full value,BUT if you bring stuff from tackle shops in Japan or Hong Kong, they always declare as gifts or electronics
with a value of $30,so you save a bit on the vat here, the only other thing you pay will be clearing fees, that also varies,I will check what I pay on average and let you know.

This is the type of info you can't google! thanks, seriously i've been itching to order form the US, i always seem to steer away from it purely because there is not any info about customs and duties available. Good Stuff Afrifil.

I buy from Ebay. Its quite simple really, It take a bit of patience but you can find some bargains. I will try to break down what i do in a typical purchase.

1. try find all the items you want at one ebay store
2. If its doesn't state shipping to SA, send the owner a message asking him and he will reply.
3. check the shipping cost, and have a calculator ready, also have the latest rand dollar exchange rate handy.
4.If it doesn't state that you can combine shipping multiple items ask the guy.
5.try and watch as many items as you can from one store and try to only get items on bids not buy it now. That't where you get the bargains.
6.Ebay is fully customizable you can right note t yourself on items sellers pretty much anything. I work out the shipping cost of say 5 items (u get discounted shipping on many items from the same store) I wright a note stating the highest i am prepared to bid. then all you do is bid that amount, now her is the trick! you have to wait and watch to get the bargains before someone else does. If only enter you max bid 20 seconds or less b4 the bid ends that way no one else can go higher. It take a bit of planning but it worth it.just work it out in rands and and in the shipping cost I have got Lures from ebay for Less than 50% of what I would pay here.

7.be aware all the imports duties etc and If you don't want to risk loosing a parcel insure it or pay extra for a better shipping method with a tracking number. I have made 15 purchases so far and only had one not arrive. But all is not lost you have a claim if your parcel doesn't arrive. As long as you log a complaint b4 a certain cut of time. I was tooo late to recoop my lost order alas. but I have saved so much maney it doesn't matter.

8. check the seller rating if he has had bad feedback stay away.

here is an example of my latest purchase.

Item # Item Title Qty. Price
370187887243 LUHR-JENSEN HOT LIPS EXPRESS 1/2 OZ BASS LURES QTY 6 Z 1 US $13.50 (3 of each colour)
370141542708 Mister Twister Hawg Frog Kit 20 pieces Stk # HFK1 1 US $7.95 (14 frogs 6 hooks)

Subtotal: US $21.45
Shipping and handling via USPS First Class Mail International:
US $12.00

Total: US $33.45

at the time it came to R300 or so bargain right

Hi Frogstar,no friend in the US,there are a lot of US shipping brokerage companies that specializes in the so-called in-between shipping agencies, you will find that a lot of companies and some eBay shops for the matter of fact will not ship outside the US,never mind to Africa, what these brokerage shipping companies do is to supply you with a street address that you can ship to,what a lot of companies then will accept and ship to,they will even go so far as to being  your personal shopper in the US,typical stores like Wal-Mart,Sears (check Sears.com for the best tools you have ever seen),Target ect, will not sell to anybody without a US credit card or social security number, you find what you want, they will buy it for you, charges are 6% of total price, now here are some bargains to be have,I simply use one of these companies to do my shipping for me, have for many years.Just a note on the 3x a year import,as a individual person SARS allow you to import 3 shipments a year,if you import or plan to import more than that , SARS might and a big might query what are the goods used for, or are they for resale, you can register at any SARS or Customs office for a importers tariff code (license),this is free of charge, and you can import to your hearts contend.

Have u got a name or a site of one of these companies so we can check them out ourselves?
I have other things i wana bring in and would be amped to check this option out.
Thanx
